The Opportunity

We are recruiting an experienced Shift Technician / Senior Critical Facilities Engineer to join the engineering team at a major financial-services data centre in Croydon. This is a senior position within the shift team, effectively operating as the 2IC for the data centre. You'll support site leadership with the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a mission-critical facility while remaining technically hands-on. The position would suit an experienced HVAP engineer looking to take on greater responsibility without moving away from engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure within a live data centre.
  • Act as HV Authorised Person (HVAP), supporting HV switching, isolations and safe systems of work.
  • Operate as the 2IC within the engineering team, supporting the site's engineering leadership.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to shift engineers.
  • Coordinate specialist subcontractors and engineering activities.
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across:
    • HV/LV electrical distribution
    • UPS systems
    • Generators
    • Switchgear
    • Critical cooling / HVAC
    • CRAC/CRAH systems
    • BMS and associated infrastructure
  • Respond to alarms, incidents and equipment failures within a mission-critical environment.
  • Manage RAMS, permits, isolations and safe systems of work.
  • Support incident investigations, root-cause analysis and technical reporting.
  • Ensure engineering activities meet all relevant H&S, compliance and operational standards.
  • Support continuous improvement across site operations and maintenance.

What We're Looking For

  • HVAP / HV Authorised Person experience – essential.
  • Strong electrical engineering background with relevant technical qualifications.
  • Experience within data centres, critical environments or other mission-critical facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of HV/LV systems, UPS, generators and switchgear.
  • Good working understanding of HVAC and critical cooling systems.
  • Previous experience as a Senior Shift Engineer, Lead Technician, Shift Lead or similar is highly desirable.
  • Comfortable acting as the technical escalation point during incidents.
  • Strong understanding of permits, isolations, RAMS and safe systems of work.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment where resilience and uptime are critical.
