JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment) to deliver a professional rehabilitation service to adults with visual loss and dual sensory impairment. You will work directly with individuals and families to promote independence, choice, and inclusion, supporting people to maximise their daily living and mobility skills.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The duties and responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Deliver rehabilitation programmes for adults with visual impairment, supporting independent living and mobility.
  • Undertake needs-led assessments for new and existing service users.
  • Deliver orientation, mobility, safety, and sighted guide training.
  • Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams and contribute to joint decision-making.
  • Provide advice on accessibility in homes, council buildings, and public environments.
  • Coordinate and chair network meetings for individual service users.
  • Order specialist equipment in line with assessed needs and budgetary requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records using departmental IT systems.
  • Work within the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding frameworks.
  • Liaise with statutory, voluntary, and community organisations.
  • Support service users with communication methods such as Braille, Moon, typing, or assistive technology.
  • Work with Guide Dog Training Centres to assess suitability for guide dog ownership.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will have the following skills and competencies:

  • Diploma in Higher Education (DipHE) in Rehabilitation Studies or FDSc Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment) or equivalent.
  • Experience working with people with visual impairment.
  • Proven ability to carry out needs-led assessments.
  • Experience delivering orientation and mobility training.
  • Experience working with older adults and/or disabled people.
  • Knowledge of the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding.
  • Strong communication, organisational, and partnership-working skills.
