JOB ROLE
My client is seeking an experienced Head of Legal Services to provide strategic leadership for a comprehensive legal function within a complex local authority environment. This is a high-profile and varied leadership opportunity for a senior legal professional who can combine strong technical expertise with commercial awareness, sound judgement and the ability to influence at the highest levels of an organisation. You will lead the continued development of the legal service, ensuring it responds effectively to changing organisational priorities and supports a wider transformation agenda.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The duties and responsibilities of the role will include:
- You will have overall responsibility for the leadership, development and effective delivery of the legal service, providing trusted professional advice and constructive challenge to senior managers, elected members and key partners.
- Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing strategic leadership and direction across the legal service.
- Ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive, specialist and responsive legal service across the organisation and its key partner authority.
- Advising and constructively challenging senior managers and elected members on complex legal, governance and regulatory matters.
- Leading the ongoing development and transformation of the legal function.
- Taking responsibility for service budgets, financial management and income generation.
- Building strong relationships with senior stakeholders, elected representatives and external partners.
- Leading, negotiating, influencing and collaborating effectively across organisational boundaries.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE
The successful candidate will have the following skills and competencies:
- You will need significant experience working within a legal services function in a local authority setting, together with senior management experience and a proven track record of leading, developing and supporting teams.
- They are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:
- Significant experience within local government legal services.
- Senior management experience, including responsibility for leading and developing teams.
- A broad legal background covering a range of local authority services.
- Knowledge and understanding of Adult Social Care and Children's Social Care legal matters.
- The ability to provide credible legal advice and constructive challenge to senior leaders and elected members.
- Strong understanding of local government governance and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience of managing change, service improvement and organisational transformation.
