Are you eager to land a brand new role? Our client, a public sector client in Bristol, are looking for an experienced Environmental Health Investigator to join their team and play a crucial role in their public protection operations.

Position:
Environmental Health Investigator
Rate: £40 per hour (Umbrella)
Contract Duration: Temp (Apr 2026) Possible Extension
Working Arrangement: Hybrid

Job Purpose:

  • To provide a corporately responsible and accessible Environmental Health service, which delivers legislative enforcement, advice and education to promote and secure an enhanced sustainable and safe environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and collect data (survey and inspection of premises, investigation of incidents, accidents and processes, measurement of a variety of environmental factors, and accurately record this data in written or electronic form to enable fully informed decision making with regards to environmental health conditions.
  • Use appropriate legal powers, in the collection and presentation of evidence, the serving of legal notices or making of orders, seizure of equipment or goods and in pursuing court proceedings, to enforce minimum legal environmental health standards. This includes preparation of prosecution files, interviewing under caution, liaising with Legal and appointed Solicitor/Barrister/Counsel as necessary.
  • Communicate with members of the public and others, individually or collectively, in a variety of media (verbal, written or electronic) to respond effectively to complaints, explain legislative standards, mediate between conflicting individuals and groups, train and educate, promote council initiatives and to engage the public through consultation in the development and delivery of the service.

Job Requirements:

  • HND/BSc Honours Degree Level 4 or equivalent in a related discipline.
  • Must have the ‘Higher Certificate in Food Control’ issued by Environmental Health Registration Board and satisfy the Food law code of Practice competency requirements to undertake high risk inspections and all aspects of Food Control OR Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health and registration with the Environmental Health Officers Registration Board (EHRB) OR Considerable post qualification Environmental Health practice experience with a good knowledge and understanding of Environmental Health issues including legislation regulations, codes and good practice.
  • Detailed experience of the effective delivery of one of the following
    Environmental Health specialisms: Food safety, Health & safety, Housing, Pollution Control, Infectious Disease Control, Port Health.
