Salary Range: $32,000 - $45,000 (considered by HR based on duties, education, experience, etc.)
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director, Student Financial Services, the Financial Aid Counselor processes financial aid information and provides advising to prospective and current students and their families in a fast‑paced team environment, while complying with federal and state regulations and university policies. The Counselor also assists in the administration of federal, state, and institutional student aid programs for a diverse population of traditional and non‑traditional students. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, processing and awarding financial aid, analyzing data, assisting with professional judgment in consultation with the direct supervisor, and meeting with students and families to provide financial aid and account statement counseling. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Details
This position requires criminal history review, child abuse clearance, and FBI fingerprinting. Offer of employment is conditional upon successful pre‑employment drug screening. Hybrid work arrangement (on‑campus and remote); the duration is at the discretion of Temple University and the hiring department.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree. One (1) year of related experience. Demonstrated experience delivering accurate and courteous information in a fast‑paced, demanding customer service environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Education and Experience
Experience working in a financial aid office or Enrollment Management setting. Experience with Ellucian Banner Financial Aid module, Ellucian CampusLogic, COD, NSLDS, ELM, FAA Access, and AES/PHEAA systems. Prior experience in higher education, student services, customer service, or administrative support. Familiarity with FAFSA or financial aid terminology. Experience working with diverse student populations.
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with respect for a diverse population. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast‑paced environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain complex financial aid information clearly. Ability to accurately counsel students and families on financial aid eligibility, funding options, and impact on student accounts and payments. Ability to manage a high volume of inquiries via email, phone, video, and in‑person appointments. Comfort handling sensitive, confidential information and maintaining FERPA compliance. Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations consistently. Knowledge of Title IV and state aid programs, or ability to learn quickly. Demonstrated sound judgment and decision‑making within policies and procedures. Proficiency with computer systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and willingness to learn student information systems. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, following senior staff guidance. Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships across multiple institutional levels. Ability to work with individuals of varying technical proficiency; multilingual skills are a plus. Ability to participate in cross‑functional student service and recruitment initiatives, including events such as Open House. Ability to work overtime, extended hours, nights, weekends, and early mornings when necessary.
