About the Role: We are currently seeking a reliable, proactive, and experienced School Caretaker to join a welcoming and well-regarded school in the Southwark area. This is a full-time position with an immediate start, offering a key opportunity to contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the school. As the School Caretaker, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the school premises are maintained to a high standard, safe, secure, and fully operational for staff and students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Opening and closing the school premises daily, ensuring security protocols are followed.
- Carrying out general maintenance, minor repairs, painting, and basic plumbing as required.
- Conducting regular health and safety checks, including fire alarms, emergency lighting, and building inspections.
- Ensuring all external areas (playgrounds, pathways, entrances) are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
- Liaising with contractors and monitoring works carried out on-site.
- Managing the site's heating, lighting, and ventilation systems.
- Supporting with setting up rooms for school events, exams, or lettings.
- Responding promptly to any maintenance or safety issues as they arise.
- Monitoring stock levels of cleaning and maintenance supplies and ordering replacements as necessary.
- Supporting the school's compliance with health & safety regulations and contributing to risk assessments.
Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one before starting).
- Previous experience as a school caretaker or in a similar facilities or premises role (school-based experience highly desirable).
- Good knowledge of general maintenance, DIY, and basic repairs.
- Understanding of health and safety practices in an educational setting.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks (lifting, carrying, etc.).
- Strong communication skills and a professional attitude.
- Flexibility around shift patterns, including occasional evening or weekend work if needed.
