Tempest Jones is proud to be partnering with one of the UK's leading independent project and cost management consultancies to appoint a Commercial Director / Cost Director into their Major Projects team.
This is a rare opportunity to join a nationally recognised business at the forefront of delivering one of the UK's largest healthcare capital investment programmes, representing approximately £36 billion of investment into the future of NHS infrastructure.
Rather than overseeing a portfolio of smaller schemes, you will provide commercial leadership on individual flagship hospital developments typically valued between £500 million and £1 billion+.
These are complex, technically demanding projects that require exceptional commercial leadership from early strategic business case through procurement, construction and final account.
If you've built your career delivering major capital projects for a Tier 1 contractor or leading consultancy and want to influence nationally significant infrastructure from the client side, this is an outstanding opportunity.
The Opportunity
As Commercial Director / Cost Director, you will become the trusted commercial advisor to clients, senior project leadership teams and key delivery partners throughout the full lifecycle of major healthcare developments.
You will lead commercial strategy, provide robust cost leadership and oversee the successful delivery of projects where governance, stakeholder management and commercial performance are fundamental to success.
Working alongside government bodies, NHS organisations, designers, contractors and project management teams, you will help deliver healthcare facilities that will serve communities for decades to come.
Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the commercial and cost management of major healthcare construction projects valued from £500 million to more than £1 billion.
  • Develop and implement commercial strategies from business case through to project completion.
  • Lead cost planning, procurement strategy, commercial reporting and financial governance.
  • Drive value engineering, commercial risk management and change control.
  • Provide commercial leadership throughout procurement, delivery and final account.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders, government bodies and delivery partners.
  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary commercial and cost management teams.
  • Mentor and develop the next generation of commercial leaders within the business.
  • Support business growth by contributing to strategic client relationships and major project opportunities.

About You
You will already be operating within a senior commercial leadership role on complex major projects and will have developed your experience either with a Tier 1 contractor or a leading project and cost consultancy.
You are likely to currently hold a position such as:
  • Commercial Director
  • Cost Director
  • Regional Director
  • Senior Commercial Manager
  • Head of Commercial
  • Regional Commercial Manager
  • Partner

Most importantly, you will have successfully delivered large, technically complex construction projects where commercial leadership has been critical to project success.
Experience
We are particularly interested in individuals who have delivered major projects within sectors such as:
  • Healthcare
  • Aviation
  • Rail
  • Nuclear
  • Defence
  • Data Centres
  • Major Commercial Developments
  • Infrastructure (not heavy civils)

You should demonstrate:
  • Proven experience leading the commercial delivery of individual capital projects valued at £300 million+.
  • Strong experience gained within a Tier 1 contractor is highly desirable, although candidates from leading project and cost consultancies delivering comparable projects will also be considered.
  • Excellent knowledge of NEC and other standard forms of contract.
  • Expertise across procurement, commercial management, cost planning and commercial governance.
  • Experience leading high performing commercial teams on major projects.
  • Outstanding communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence executive level decision makers.

Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or a related discipline, along with MRICS, MCIOB or an equivalent professional qualification is preferred.
