Overview
This role is responsible for providing expert health and safety advice, guidance, and support across all College activities. Acting as a central point of contact for occupational and vocational health and safety matters, the postholder will work closely with the Director of Estates to address health and safety concerns, respond to queries, and promote a safe and compliant working and learning environment. As the College operates across multiple sites, the role encompasses responsibility for supporting health and safety arrangements in all buildings and locations where the College has a presence. The postholder will work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to ensure consistent standards, compliance with relevant legislation, and the effective implementation of health and safety policies and procedures across the College estate. This role is term time only, working 36 weeks per year.
Responsibilities
- Carry out and record general day-to-day health and safety checks and inspections.
- Be a central point for advice and guidance on health and safety issues, supporting curriculum and business support staff accordingly.
- Carry out regular workplace inspections of vocational departments, collating reports and action plans, and following up on timely completion of remedials recommended.
- Updating risk assessments and COSHH registers, with relevant departments, to ensure they are current and fit for purpose.
- Reviewing risk assessments on an annual basis, and creating new risk assessments for one‑off events and activities.
- Checking comprehensiveness of risk assessments produced by others for trips, off‑site and on‑site activities.
- Support the Director of Estates with providing training sessions and inductions to new and existing staff.
- Reviewing and updating the College Health and Safety policy, in conjunction with the Director of Estates, to ensure that the contents remain current and inclusive of any legislative amendments.
- Liaising with other managers to promote good health and safety practice and prevention.
- Co-ordinating and monitoring fire drills in all buildings, and sites, on a termly basis, recording evacuation times and any issues experienced, ensuring they are closed out timely.
- Supporting the Director of Estates with completion of PEEPS and individual health risk assessments for staff and students, where requested.
Qualifications and Training
- Experience of using MS Office applications such as Word and Excel, and general computer skills.
- Relevant health and safety experience in an education setting, or employment as a health and safety advisor in other sectors.
- An understanding of and commitment to diversity and equality of opportunity.
- Knowledge and/or competencies of health and safety as relevant to the post and a commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of learners and others.
- Physically fit as the post involves a great deal of walking, climbing stairs and heavy lifting and lowering.
- Possess a full driving licence and have immediate access to a car in case of emergency callout.
- Be in possession of relevant H&S related qualifications, such as the NEBOSH general certificate in occupational health and safety, and IOSH Managing Safely.
