An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Council's Highways Maintenance Team as a Highways Inspector within the Highways, Engineering & Project Delivery Service.

This is a key frontline role where you will help ensure that one of the Midlands' largest local highway networks remains safe, functional and well maintained.

Working as part of a dedicated and professional team, you will undertake routine and reactive highway inspections, identify defects, investigate customer enquiries and support the delivery of maintenance and improvement programmes across the borough.

About the Service

The Highways, Engineering & Project Delivery Service i s responsible for the planning, design, delivery and maintenance of the borough's highway infrastructure, supporting safe and sustainable travel while ensuring compliance with statutory duties .

The Council manages an extensive highway asset portfolio including

  • Over 626 miles of carriageway
  • Over 743 miles of footways
  • 132 miles of cycleways
  • Approximately 25,000 streetlights
  • 120 roundabouts
  • Around 18,000 traffic signs
  • Approximately 36,000 highway gullies

These assets are vital to everyday life across the borough and require effective inspection, maintenance and asset management to keep communities connected.

About the Role

As a Highways Inspector, you will

  • Carry out scheduled safety inspections of highway assets in accordance with the Council's Highway Safety Inspection Policy.
  • Undertake reactive inspections in response to customer reports and enquiries.
  • Identify highway defects and determine appropriate remedial actions.
  • Monitor completed works and ensure repairs meet required standards.
  • Support the Council in fulfilling its statutory duties under the Highways Act 1980, Traffic Management Act 2004 and New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA).
  • Liaise with contractors, utility companies, members of the public and elected members.
  • Use digital inspection and asset management systems to record findings and manage workloads.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a safe and efficient highway network while minimising disruption to road users.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will demonstrate

  • Experience of highways maintenance, inspections or a related technical environment.
  • Knowledge of highway assets, defects and maintenance practices.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • The ability to make sound decisions and work independently.
  • Strong organisational and IT skills.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Qualifications relating to highways inspection, NRSWA, highway maintenance or asset management would be advantageous, although training and development opportunities will be available for the right candidate.
