The Highways Engineer will work in conjunction with the Regional Manager North working in the IU Installation Team – North to carry out Technology and Electrical Installations in Areas 7, 10, 12, 13 and 14.
As well as supporting the designated maintenance contracts in these regions to develop and improve all technology performance.
The area covers (Barnsley-Nottinghamshire, Hull to Leeds, Manchester to Liverpool, Cumbria to Preston and Newcastle to Thirsk).
This field‑based role requires flexibility to work days/nights as the contract requires, with overnight stays due to the area to be covered.
What you’ll do
- Provide local contract and network support of the team in designated areas, taking responsibility for all electrical and technology installations, electrical testing, fault finding and repairs, electrical jointing, reactive and planned maintenance.
- Take the lead onsite.
- Liaise daily with the lead engineer and technology engineers to ensure works are planned and equipment is available.
- Be responsible for all technology/electrical installation and maintenance tasks as determined by the Regional Manager North.
- Adjust work allocations in response to emergency incidents and short‑notice changes.
- Proactively undertake client and customer liaison, and deal with service partners, supply chain and other stakeholders.
Who you are
This role would suit someone from an electrical background (installations/maintenance) and use this knowledge to gain an understanding of highways technology equipment including ANPR, message signs, CCTV, MIDAS, cabinets, traffic signals, weather stations and traffic counting technologies.
Key requirements
- Demonstrate a high degree of fault competence, including coordinating maintenance teams and liaising with third‑party resources.
- Come from an electrical background, ideally with 18th edition, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
- Must be flexible, adaptable and prepared to work days, nights and stay overnight as the contract requires.
- Hold a full UK driving licence.
