We are looking for a Technical Specialist to join our Rail Division here at Telent to provide expert technical leadership across complex telecoms engineering projects. Within this role you will be looking towards the future and how we can improve, develop and advance our current solution offering to our customers. The role supports and guides the Senior and Principal Engineers, ensuring delivery of compliant, safe, and technically robust engineering solutions. The Technical Specialist will act as a subject-matter expert and design authority for telecoms systems, translating client requirements into innovative workable engineering outcomes and supporting delivery teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Deliverables
- Review our current technology solutions within our Rail division and look to the future as to how we can utilise new technologies and advancement in software to ensure we are providing the best solutions possible to our customers.
- Head multidisciplinary design teams to develop innovative solutions and resolve complex technical challenges.
- Head technical investigations to issues encountered which cannot be resolved by delivery teams.
- Conduct design reviews and quality assurance checks on technical engineering documentation produced by internal design teams.
- Support the project lifecycle, representing Engineering to present the technical solution at PSR meetings.
- Head internal and external technical meetings, including IDCs/IDRs with customers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Act as a core interface between engineering, software, testing, installation, project management, and commercial teams.
- Undertake site surveys and audits, validate designs and identify engineering risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Head the production, management, and technical review of RFIs, TQs, and site information requests.
- Produce and/or review method statements and work package documentation (e.g., WPPs, TBSs) for submission to the client.
Responsibilities
- Bring new ideas, provide a technical refresh and investigate new innovation to future proof our offerings and solutions.
- Head technical queries and engineering solutions across the wider rail telecoms portfolio.
- Act as a primary client-facing technical contact, ensuring accurate communication and alignment on project engineering matters.
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with HSE requirements, industry regulations, Network Rail standards, and project-specific technical obligations.
- Provide specialist expertise across key elements of telecoms systems, technology platforms, and solution architecture.
- Head Proof of Concepts (POCs), First of a Kind (FOAK) deployments, technical trials, and validation activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, technical governance, and assurance processes across the engineering function.
- Guide junior engineers and contribute to the development of technical capability within the team.
- Liaise with the Core Engineering Teams across Telent and the wider M Group.
Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of innovative solutions, utilising new technologies, advancement of software, AI etc whilst adhering to telecoms, and engineering standards and processes.
- Experience of working on a Tech Refresh programme.
- Exceptional attention to detail, including under time-critical or high-pressure project phases.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills, with confidence heading multidisciplinary engineering discussions.
- High level of computer literacy, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to provide technical guidance on business development opportunities, bids, and tender responses.
- Customer-focused approach, able to work effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability and willingness to mentor engineering colleagues and support technical capability development.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex technical information and visualise system behaviours.
- Maintain composure and effective decision making during demanding or high-pressure project phases.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Minimum BEng or equivalent professional experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Specific technical qualifications relevant to the specialist area (e.g., telecoms, IP networking, operational comms, radio, fibre).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or demonstrable equivalent level of professional expertise.
- IRSE licence in a relevant engineering category.
- Experience operating under Principal Designer and/or Principal Contractor responsibilities.
