You may also need to travel to supplier sites if or when needed - full UK driving license flexibility to travel required.

When you join our Engineering team at Telent, you'll be empowered to innovate and deliver critical solutions that protect people and infrastructure. You'll work alongside technical experts on complex, safety‑critical projects that truly make a difference - helping to keep the UK's essential services connected and protected 24/7.

The role

We're looking for a Design Engineer to join our specialist PAVA (Public Address & Voice Alarm) team, supporting the design and delivery of emergency alerts / alerting systems on major, high-profile infrastructure projects - namely, Hinkley Point C (HPC Nuclear) and Sizewell C (Nuclear). Reporting into the PAVA Engineering function, you'll play a key role in designing compliant, buildable, and high-quality solutions across public address, evacuation, and emergency alert systems.

What you'll do:

  • Produce detailed system designs for PAVA and emergency alerts / alerting systems, including evacuation, public address and staff announcement solutions.
  • Design systems that integrate with fire detection systems, telephony systems and emergency response infrastructure, including audio and visual alerting.
  • Develop designs suitable for high-noise environments, considering acoustic performance and intelligibility.
  • Support project teams by delivering robust, buildable designs and associated documentation (compliance statements, design calculations, drawings, BOMs, surveys, test procedures, installation, maintenance and commissioning procedures, etc.).
  • Value-engineer designs, checking for buildability, compliance, and opportunities to improve efficiency.
  • Liaise with project managers, installation teams, suppliers, and clients to ensure technical requirements are clearly understood.
  • Ensure all designs comply with Telent's (and the projects) Quality, Safety, Environmental and all applicable Design, Installation, Commissioning, Maintenance and Engineering standards.

Who you are:

You're a practical, technically minded engineer with experience in PAVA, public address or Emergency Evacuation systems, who enjoys translating real-world installation knowledge into high-quality design solutions. You may already be working in a design role, or you could be an experienced installer, commissioning engineer or systems engineer looking to move into design.

Key requirements:

  • Experience designing or working with PAVA / Public Address / Emergency Alerts / Emergency Alerting systems.
  • Practical knowledge of system installation, commissioning, or integration within customer environments.
  • Familiarity with Zenitel (formerly ASL - Application Solutions (Safety & Security) Limited) systems is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of acoustic design principles (formal qualifications are a bonus but not essential).
  • Understanding of applicable Design, Installation, Commissioning, Maintenance and Engineering standards including but not limited to BS 5839-8, EN 54, etc.
  • Experience in Acoustic Modelling (CATT, SketchUp, Navisworks, etc.).
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation, drawings, bills of materials, compliance statements, design calculations, surveys, test procedures, installation, maintenance and commissioning procedures, etc.
  • Review or approval of Design Documentation produced by others including project team members and suppliers.
  • Proven track record and experience working within an operational environment.
  • Experience of Installation Design requirements within customer environments.
  • Experience in system and equipment design.
  • Eligible for BPSS clearance and have a minimum 5 years UK residency; SC may be required in future.
  • Full UK driving licence (occasional travel to client or supplier sites).
