Job Description

Job Summary

We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer to combine hands-on technical work with people leadership.

You will be first line manager for up to eight engineers spread across several scrum teams, covering a range of Software Engineering disciplines and seniority levels from Apprentice to Principal.

You will remain an active contributor, with development skills at least equal to an experienced Senior Software Engineer.

That means designing and building production-quality software, reviewing code with authority, guiding technical decisions, and setting the standard for engineering practice.

You will be expected to know your way around modern, AI-augmented development workflows and to show your reports how to use them effectively and economically.

As a line manager, you will be responsible for the growth, wellbeing and performance of your reports.

This includes regular one-to-ones, objective setting, performance reviews, career development plans, recruitment and onboarding.

Your reports will work in different scrums and specialisations, so you will work closely with Product Owners, Scrum Masters and Principal Engineers.

Together you will balance individual development with team delivery, spot skills gaps and coverage risks, and make sure engineers are deployed where they add the most value.

You will act early on underperformance, champion good work, and build an inclusive, psychologically safe environment where people can do their best work.

The ideal candidate is a credible engineer who has found that they get as much satisfaction from developing people as from shipping code.

You will be comfortable switching between technical detail and people matters, often in the same day, and will communicate clearly with engineers, stakeholders and senior management alike.

Previous experience of line management or formal mentoring in an agile environment is strongly preferred.

So is a track record of improving engineering practices, delivery predictability and team health across more than one team.

As a guide you should expect a 60/40 split technical work to line management.

  • Job Role
  • Design, build, test and maintain high-quality software as a hands-on contributor at senior engineer level or above.
  • Help promote and establish CI/CD, test automation, code quality and delivery predictability.
  • Review code and designs across teams, setting and enforcing engineering standards and best practices.
  • Work with Principal Engineers on architecture, technical direction and resolving cross-team technical risks.
  • Line-manage around 8 engineers across multiple scrum teams and disciplines
  • Hold regular one-to-ones focused on wellbeing, performance, feedback and career growth.
  • Set objectives with each report, track progress, and lead mid-year and annual performance reviews.
  • Create and support personal development plans, including training, mentoring and stretch opportunities, addressing underperformance early, using formal processes where needed.
  • Recognise and champion good work, both within the team and to senior management
  • This job is hybrid with 4 days per week in our Fareham office.
  • Carry out the role in accordance with all relevant legislation and following Raymarine’s policies and processes (including but not limited to those relating to ethics, compliance, cyber security, product development, labour and human rights, and the environment.)
  • Undertake all mandatory training as requested.
  • To be ready to take on this role we would love if you have
  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related STEM subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Commercial software development experience, ideally at Senior Engineer level or above with a portfolio of experience having included some of the following:
  • Diagnosed and fixed difficult customer-reported faults, often with incomplete information, intermittent symptoms or under time pressure.
  • Been on the front line of a serious production incident, helping restore service and then leading or contributing to a blameless root-cause analysis.
  • Dealt with the impact of your own (or your team’s) code going wrong in the field, and put measures in place so it didn’t happen again.
  • Led a small development (a feature, component or project) from requirements through design, build, test and release, ensuring it met company quality, security and compliance standards
  • Broken down ambiguous or poorly defined requirements into a deliverable plan, and pushed back constructively when scope, estimates or quality were at risk.
  • Delivered against a hard deadline and made sensible, visible trade-offs to get there without quietly cutting corners.
  • Worked with testers, product owners, support teams or customers to get a release over the line.
  • Mentored or coached junior engineers and can point to how they grew as a result
  • Given difficult feedback to a peer, or received it, and handled it well
  • Resolved a disagreement on technical direction, priorities or ways of working without escalation becoming the default
  • Represented the team to stakeholders or senior management, explaining technical issues in business terms
  • Proven experience working in Agile/Scrum teams
  • Strong technical depth in C++, for an embedded environment with hands‑on experience of CI/CD, automated testing, and AI-assisted development tools
  • The right to work in the UK.
