Job Outline

To produce precision lens components and assemblies to within the defined limits of dimensional accuracy and within the planned times, sometimes under the guidance of a Senior Technician, and in accordance with all departmental and company procedures, across a range of machines and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure component quality is acceptable and dimensions are correct to ensure its suitability for further processing.
  • Select, inspect and prepare all required tooling to ensure the accurate production of components and assemblies.
  • Ensure all component preparatory work is carried out correctly to attain precision components efficiently and minimise expensive component losses.
  • Select relevant tooling and equipment to attain the most effective method of producing high‑quality precision components.
  • Ensure that the required quality and operating standards are satisfied throughout each stage of manufacture to achieve optimum quality.
  • Set up relevant machinery to ensure efficient production of precision components.
  • Inspect the components being worked on throughout the operation and decide on alterations required to achieve the finished component.
  • Re‑work damaged components when possible to recoup potential losses.
  • Instruct other employees in the operation of machinery and processes and assist other personnel in the department.
  • Ensure that the equipment and work area are cleaned and maintained in accordance with the operator’s maintenance schedule and the required departmental standards.
  • Support the business needs by participating in ongoing process and business improvement programmes.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

  • Applicants must possess a good level of education and hold qualifications in mathematics and science at GCSE level (or equivalent).
  • Candidates will also be required to demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills and a positive attitude to work.
  • The ideal candidate will have an engineering‑based background (preferably involving high‑value/precision‑made products) with knowledge of production processes, gained from practical experience.

Desirable Attributes

  • Physics or maths based qualification(s) at A‑Level (or equivalent) standard or higher.
  • Experience of working in a manufacturing environment (preferably involving high‑value/precision‑made products).
  • An appreciation of mechanical principles.
  • AS9100 awareness and/or experience is desirable.
