As a Mental Health Advisor Affiliate, you will provide confidential emotional support to service users and offer advice and guidance around mental health and related issues. Our service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and affiliates are invited to express their availability for shifts across the service schedule. Our services also include supporting clients via the myStrength App.

Our Mental Health Service provides high quality mental health services to clients accessing healthcare via their insurance provider or employer. Our services include assessment, therapy, in the moment support, and digital self-help tools. We believe in the efficacy of virtual interventions, and we provide brief therapy to a low-risk population, presenting with mild-moderate common mental health problems.

Contract type: Self‐employed contractor (Affiliate)

Salary: £14–£17 per hour, depending on shift type (standard hours vs out‐of‐hours)

Hours of work: Flexible and agreed per shift. Affiliates may choose and accept shifts based on their availability. The service is a 24 hour service working days/evenings/nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Location: Remote. Affiliates may be invited to attend occasional in‐person activities (e.g., optional training sessions, team days or client events), though participation is not mandatory.

Person Specification

  • Experience providing telephone‐based or digital emotional support to a range of clients, including individuals in distress.
  • Excellent telephone manner with strong active listening, questioning, and reflective skills.
  • Genuine empathy towards mental health issues and a commitment to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health.
  • Experience in assessing and responding to mental health risk within a remote setting.
  • You will have proven communication skills, a confident manner and be articulate.
  • Hold awareness of the effects of stigma and discrimination.
  • Knowledge of recovery in the context of mental health.
  • The ability to signpost and offer guidance to clients regarding local or national services.

Role Expectations / Key Activities

  • Provide confidential emotional support to service users and provide advice and guidance around mental health and other issues.
  • Support clients to make an application for therapy via their provider app.
  • Generate individual Risk Support Plans for patients based upon risk assessments, enabling wider services to support patients appropriately.
  • Liaise with duty lead and follow risk protocols, as and when necessary.
  • To maintain accurate good quality clinical notes and service monitoring records in accordance with the Service Delivery Framework and high clinical practice standards.
  • Work collaboratively with team members within the mental health service.
  • Participate in clinical supervision as part of governance and quality assurance (not line management).
  • Engage in optional team learning, peer forums, or updates where they support service quality.
  • Provide reasonable support to the onboarding of other affiliates where appropriate and mutually agreed.
  • Work flexibly by expressing availability for shifts across days, evenings, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
  • Any other duties relevant to the role.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Affiliates must hold at least one of the following:
  • Counselling Certificate Level 2 or Level 3 (or equivalent)
  • MHFA Qualification
  • Trainee counsellor (note: role not counted as a training placement)
  • Psychology degree (or equivalent)
