The EHS Assistant will support Environment, Health & Safety activities across UK R&D sites, ensuring compliance with UK EHS legislation and internal standards. The role involves hands-on site support, contractor oversight, audits, risk assessments, incident investigations, and EHS documentation.
Key Responsibilities:- Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)
- Ensure Safe Systems of Work are implemented and followed across R&D sites.
- Review Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
- Issue permits to work and communicate requirements to relevant personnel.
- Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with approved RAMS.
- Stop work where unsafe practices or conditions are observed.
- Inspections, Audits & Compliance
- Coordinate and manage statutory inspection schedules and follow-up actions.
- Support audit preparation and track corrective actions to closure.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and report findings.
- Risk Assessment & Change Control
- Support the completion and review of risk assessments.
- Participate in change control processes, assessing EHS risks related to new processes, equipment, or materials.
- Work with cross-functional teams to implement appropriate risk mitigation measures.
- Incident Management
- Carry out initial EHS reviews and investigations of near misses, good saves, and incidents.
- Perform root cause analysis and document findings.
- Assist in developing, tracking, and closing corrective and preventive actions.
- Documentation & Communication
- Support the preparation and review of EHS procedures and documentation.
- Monitor and respond to the UK R&D EHS group email inbox.
- Compile and distribute EHS communications and promotional materials for safety initiatives.
- Continuous Improvement
- Support EHS data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Prepare performance reports to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and EHS best practice.
- Good knowledge of UK EHS regulations and best practices.
- Understanding of risk assessment, incident investigation, auditing, and Safe Systems of Work.
- Strong organisational and documentation skills with high attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with contractors and cross-functional teams.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel).
- NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent).
- Practical experience in an EHS or health & safety support role.
- Experience within the pharmaceutical or R&D environment is advantageous.
