Role Summary
We're looking for a cloud efficiency engineer to join the team. This is a hands-on specialist role: you'll bring deep expertise in cloud infrastructure cost optimization and apply it directly to implementing multi-million-dollar efficiency gains across one of the world's largest Kubernetes fleets. You'll work alongside senior engineers and a data scientist who identify and prioritise opportunities. Your job is to take those opportunities and make them real - digging into GCP configurations, workload profiles, and Kubernetes resource settings to implement changes that reduce cost while maintaining performance and reliability. You bring the specialist knowledge that makes the difference between a safe 30% rightsizing and an aggressive one that pages on-call at 3am.
The Opportunity
This environment runs at a massive scale; the team was formed to capture systematic efficiency gains that individual teams miss. The pipeline extends to JVM tuning, autoscaling efficiency, workload placement, and storage optimization. This role exists because cloud cost optimization at this scale requires specialist knowledge: understanding GCP pricing models, machine type trade-offs, committed use discount strategies, and how Kubernetes scheduling interacts with cloud billing. You'll bring that expertise to a team of strong infrastructure engineers who know the platform deeply but need a partner who thinks natively in cost-per-unit-of-compute.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure engineering, with hands-on work in cost optimization and resource efficiency (not just monitoring or reporting)
- Deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform (or equivalent depth in AWS/Azure with willingness to transfer to GCP) - you understand machine type characteristics, pricing models, and how Kubernetes scheduling decisions translate to cloud spend
- Hands-on experience optimizing Kubernetes/GKE workloads at scale - you've personally rightsized services, tuned autoscalers, and debugged resource contention issues
- Strong enough in Java to profile JVM-based services, interpret GC logs, adjust heap and thread pool configurations, and evaluate runtime alternatives - this fleet is heavily JVM-based
- Demonstrated ability to implement cost optimizations that delivered measurable savings in a cloud-native environment
- Skilled at navigating the reliability trade-offs of efficiency work
- Deep JVM performance tuning experience is a plus
