TEK4, founded in 2002, designs and manufactures advanced machining systems in Leicestershire, UK, serving a growing international customer base. The company significantly expanded its facilities in 2018, adding a showroom, research center, and increased production capacity to support global demand. TEK4 specializes in EDM fast hole drilling, combined EDM and laser machines for hole drilling and ceramic coating ablation, laser drilling and cutting, and ECM for deep STEM cooling holes in gas turbine components. Customers benefit from in-house process development, turnkey solutions, and process innovation delivered by a multidisciplinary team of design, software, mechanical, electronic, and application engineers.

This is a full-time, on-site Laser Development Engineer role based in Leicestershire. The Laser Development Engineer will design, develop, and optimize laser-based drilling and cutting processes for TEK4’s advanced machining systems. Daily tasks include conducting experimental R&D on laser applications, collaborating with mechanical, software, and electronics engineers to integrate laser solutions, and performing testing and validation of new laser systems and processes. The role involves supporting process development for customer projects, documenting technical findings, and contributing to continuous improvement of machine performance, reliability, and safety. The engineer will also assist with troubleshooting laser-related issues, preparing technical reports, and providing input into future product development roadmaps.

Qualifications:

  • Strong Research and Development (R&D) skills, including experimental design, data analysis, and process optimization.
  • Software Development and Programming skills relevant to control systems, automation, or laser process parameter management.
  • Testing skills, including system validation, performance measurement, and root-cause analysis.
  • Electronics knowledge related to laser systems, power supplies, control hardware, and safety interlocks.
  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Experience with industrial lasers (e.g., fiber, Nd:YAG, CO₂) and laser-material interaction is highly beneficial.
  • Familiarity with CNC or automated machinery, motion control, and manufacturing environments is advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for documenting processes and presenting technical information.
