Contractual hours 21

Basis Part time

Package Part time (21 Hours per week), Permanent

The Student Adviser (Mental Health & Autism) – Out of Hours is a specialist role within our student support service, providing advice, assessment and intervention during evenings and Saturdays. The role supports students with mental health conditions, neurodiversity and other disabilities, alongside students experiencing welfare concerns. You will provide timely, person-centered support, including mental health assessments, support planning, reasonable adjustments and risk assessment, helping students to access the right support and stay engaged and able to succeed at university.

21-hour per week role, worked over three days. The working pattern is flexible and agreed between the two Out of Hours Advisers, rather than being a fixed rota. Weekday shifts are 2:30pm–10:00pm, and Saturday shifts are 9:00am–4:30pm, with the requirement to work two Saturdays per month. There may be enhancements for evening and weekend work.

We are seeking someone with the following skills, qualities and experience:

  • Experience of supporting people experiencing mental health difficulties, complex welfare needs or distress.
  • Experience of working with disabled and/or neurodivergent people and an understanding of the barriers they may experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of reasonable adjustments, equality, inclusion and accessible support.
  • Experience working in an education environment.
  • Experience of responding sensitively to complex and potentially high-risk issues, including domestic abuse, stalking, honour-based abuse and other welfare related concerns.
  • Strong assessment, professional judgement and risk-management skills, with the confidence to respond appropriately where there are concerns for a student’s safety or wellbeing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport with students and provide compassionate, non-judgemental support.
  • The ability to work effectively and independently outside core service hours, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and accurate records.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with colleagues, specialist services and external agencies, including making appropriate referrals and coordinating onward support.
  • A strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to removing barriers that can prevent students from accessing, participating in and succeeding in higher education.
  • Flexibility and reliability in working evenings and Saturdays, and the ability to work collaboratively with the other Out of Hours Adviser to agree and maintain an effective rota.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a direct and meaningful difference to students at the point they need support, providing specialist intervention when it can make the greatest difference to their safety, wellbeing, university experience and ability to succeed.

Please note that the University may ask you to participate in a number of selection activities as part of the recruitment process for this vacancy.

If you are shortlisted, your interview will take place in person, on campus.

Interviews will take place on 1 December 2026.
