School Caretaker – Romford

Permanent position starting in April 2026. Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 11:00am – 6:30pm (33 hours per week, 52 weeks per year). Salary: £27,855-£29,073 per annum (based on 33 hours per week).

Job Purpose

Working under the direction of the Site Manager, you will support the delivery of maintenance and security services across the school premises, ensuring a safe, clean, and well‑maintained environment for staff, pupils, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Security
    • Locking and unlocking school buildings and designated areas
    • Carrying out routine security checks and reporting risks
    • Monitoring fire safety equipment and assisting with fire drills
    • Operating alarm systems where required
    • Supporting lettings and site access outside normal hours
    • Being available for emergency callouts
    • Liaising with police and external security providers when necessary
  • Maintenance & Cleaning
    • Performing minor repairs (e.g. basic plumbing, changing bulbs, unblocking drains, repairing fixtures/furniture)
    • Supporting small‑scale repairs, redecorations, and site improvements
    • Maintaining general upkeep of the premises and grounds
    • Operating heating, lighting, and cooling systems
    • Managing waste collection and disposal
    • Carrying out cleaning duties including litter picking and graffiti removal
    • Providing cover for other premises staff when required
    • Assisting contractors on site (e.g. cleaning, grounds maintenance)
    • Ensuring safe external areas, including gritting in winter conditions
    • Supporting maintenance of playgrounds and sports equipment
    • Keeping pathways and external surfaces clean and hazard‑free

What We’re Looking For

  • Previous caretaking, maintenance, or facilities experience (ideally within a school or similar setting)
  • Basic practical skills across maintenance trades
  • Good understanding of health & safety procedures
  • Reliable, flexible, and able to respond to emergencies
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently

Employment is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service. For this role you need to be a UK resident and eligible to work in the UK.
