We are seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and committed Head of German to join a well-established college in the Bromley area. This is a full-time, permanent position, starting in September 2026, with the possibility of an earlier start for the successful candidate. This is an excellent opportunity to lead a thriving German department and teach KS3, GCSE & A-Level classes within a forward-thinking and supportive team dedicated to delivering high-quality teaching and learning.
About the Department
The German Department is popular and growing, with high retention rates. At GCSE and A-Level, it attracts high-calibre students who demonstrate strong work ethics and a passion for the language. In Years 10–11, students study Pearson IGCSE, while the Sixth Form follows the AQA A-Level syllabus. Years 7–9 experience a stimulating curriculum based on the Stimmt! series and enriched with broader cultural content. Recent results have been exceptional:
- GCSE: 3-year average of 94% of pupils achieving grades 7–9
- A-Level: 3-year average of 100% achieving grades A–A*
The department is part of the wider Modern Languages team, working collaboratively to promote languages across the school. It is well-resourced, housed in a modern facility, and encourages innovation, allowing the successful candidate to develop ideas and resources in a supportive and friendly environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum Leadership: Develop, implement, and maintain a high-quality German curriculum aligned with school standards and examination requirements. Ensure schemes of work, lesson plans, and assessment strategies are current and effective.
- Teaching and Learning: Teach German across multiple year groups as required. Promote innovative teaching methods and use of technology to enhance student engagement and outcomes. Monitor student progress and provide support or interventions when necessary.
- Department Management: Lead and inspire the German department, fostering a collaborative and professional environment. Manage departmental resources, budgets, and timetables efficiently. Conduct regular departmental meetings and performance reviews.
- Staff Development: Mentor and support German teachers in pedagogy, assessment, and professional growth. Encourage continuing professional development and maintain high teaching standards.
- Extracurricular & Cultural Engagement: Organise and promote German-related events, clubs, trips, and cultural activities to enrich students’ language learning experience.
- Assessment and Reporting: Oversee internal assessments and examination preparation.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Work with other language departments and school leaders to ensure a cohesive approach to language learning. Contribute to whole-school initiatives and extracurricular programmes where appropriate.
Essential Requirements
- Recent experience teaching German at KS3, GCSE & A-Level.
- Previous management experience, or an experienced teacher ready to step up.
- Recognised teaching qualification with QTS.
- Current Enhanced DBS certificate, or willingness to obtain one.
- Ability to start September 2026 (or earlier if available).
