Role Overview
We are seeking a reliable, proactive, and hands-on School Caretaker to ensure the school site is maintained to a high standard and remains clean, safe, and secure at all times. The role involves general maintenance, supervision of cleaning staff, health and safety compliance, and day-to-day support across the school premises.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance & Repairs
- Carry out minor repairs and general DIY tasks
- Undertake reactive and planned preventative maintenance (PPM)
- Support basic electrical, mechanical, and plumbing tasks
- Maintain building systems including lighting, emergency systems, and AHUs
- Cleaning & Groundskeeping
- Supervise cleaning staff and ensure standards are maintained
- Keep communal areas clean, tidy, and presentable
- Maintain outdoor areas, fixtures, and pathways
- Oversee waste disposal and recycling processes
- Security & Health & Safety
- Monitor site access points and respond to alarms
- Conduct routine fire alarm and emergency lighting tests
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations
- Record inspections and findings using an iPad or smartphone
- Support Services
- Assist with porterage duties, including moving furniture and setting up rooms
- Liaise with contractors and external service providers when required
Person Specification
- Experience
- Previous experience in a caretaking or site management role
- Practical experience in building maintenance and cleaning
- Strong DIY skills
- Experience working as part of a team
- Experience supervising a small team is desirable
- Skills & Knowledge
- Good understanding of health and safety requirements
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance work
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
- Strong organisation, planning, and prioritisation skills
- Good communication and problem-solving skills
- Personal Qualities
- Physically fit and able to carry out manual work, including working at heights
- Flexible approach to working hours, including occasional out-of-school hours
