Healthcare Support Worker (Visa Sponsorship Available)

We are looking to appoint a Healthcare Support Worker Band 3 to join our Gynaecology team on Daphne Ward, The Rosie Hospital. Daphne Ward is a 14 bedded in-patient ward with 5 day patient beds. Patients are admitted for elective Benign/Reproductive Gynaecology surgery, Gynaecology Oncology, Urogynaecological surgery, and emergency Gynaecological surgery. The ward provides a bay of 4 beds and a separate side room for women having medical management of miscarriage or medical management for termination of pregnancy up to 18 weeks.

We are seeking highly motivated and dynamic Healthcare Assistants with a passion for working within women's health to join our team. The successful applicant should be highly motivated with good interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure and work well within the team. They should have a keen desire to provide and maintain a high standard of care at all times. You will assist doctors and qualified nursing/midwifery staff with the provision of high-quality evidence-based and individualised care of patients.

Main duties of the job:

• Carry out general and clinical observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff, including recording of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration rate, Oxygen saturation monitoring.
• Participate in all aspects of patient care with particular attention to personal hygiene and grooming.
• Provision of patients' toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
• Support of patients in managing incontinence and promotion of continence.
• The recording of a patient's fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts.
• Preparation and serving of patients' meals, drinks and snacks.
• Assisting/feeding patients as necessary.
• Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances.
• Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the Registered nurse in conjunction with the patient's plan of care.
• Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from your mandatory training and in relation to the patient's manual handling plan.
• Obtaining specimens from patients for Ward or laboratory testing.
• Removal of cannula and catheters.

Person specification:

Qualifications:

• Essential criteria: Holds National Care Certificate or willingness to undertake within the first 3 months of appointment; Holds Functional Skills Level 1 Maths and English or GCSE equivalent or undertake and achieve a pass following completion of level 1 functional skills assessment; Demonstrates a commitment to further learning and development.
• Desirable criteria: Level 3 award in health care.

Experience:

• Essential criteria: Experience of working in an environment under pressure; Experience of working within a team; Experience of communicating with individuals from a range of different backgrounds; Experience of attention to detail for recording in patient records.
• Desirable criteria: Experience of working within a health care environment; Experience working in a healthcare, social care organisation/setting or service industry requiring people contact.

Knowledge:

• Essential criteria: Understands the job role and specific knowledge in relation to tasks included in the job description or be prepared to undertake training; Understand the level of competencies to be completed such as wound observation and dressings, venepuncture, removal of peripheral cannula, stoma bag changing, ECG’s and reports any issues to the Registered practitioner; Have the knowledge to or be prepared to undertake training to be able to complete clinical and vital signs observations on patients; Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct; Awareness, understanding and compliance of policies and practices e.g. Escort Policy, Prevention and control of infection and Health and Safety; Promote the importance of maintaining confidentiality; Recognise the extent and limitations of own and others competence; Use own initiative recognising when to escalate concerns to a senior member of staff; Understands the importance of consistently providing individualised care based on current research and evidence; Demonstrate awareness of the needs of area specific patient group; Understanding of the anxiety and distress of some patients and relatives; Basic anatomy and physiology.
• Desirable criteria: Prepared to undertake coaching role for other HCSW’s; IT skills.
