Location: Forth Valley Royal Hospital (Microbiology Department) Salary: £28,010 – £30,230 per annum Job Type: Full-time

Key Responsibilities

  • Specimen Processing: Handling and processing various laboratory diagnostic specimens following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Technical Support: Providing hands‑on support to scientific staff within the Microbiology laboratory.
  • Primary Testing: Performing investigations using laboratory analysers (e.g., iQ200 Sprint, Abbott Architect, Virtuo) and supporting respiratory PCR testing.
  • Specimen Management: Highlighting critical or urgent specimens to senior staff or Consultants as required.
  • Service Continuity: Managing the efficient use of expensive consumable materials to maintain service standards.
  • Laboratory Rotation: Rotating through various routine sections of the laboratory to ensure broad operational support.
  • Liaison: Coordinating with colleagues in other departments and hospitals for specialised testing.

Candidate Requirements

  • Education: Minimum SCQF Level 6 qualification (e.g., Higher in a scientific subject, SVQ Level 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities, or equivalent).
  • Experience: Previous experience working in an NHS Microbiology laboratory is preferred. Relevant laboratory experience is essential.
  • Technical Skills: Strong keyboard skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure.
  • Approach: A flexible approach to tasks and a commitment to high-quality service.
  • Background Check: The successful candidate must complete a Level 2 Disclosure Scotland check.

Working Patterns

  • Hours: Full-time, with working patterns designed to meet the needs of the service.
  • Shifts: Rotational weekend working or a shift system is required.
  • Operational Times: Shifts fall between 08:00 and 21:00.

Important Employment Information

  • Agenda for Change Update: As of April 1, 2026, the full‑time working week will reduce from 37 to 36 hours. Part‑time hours will be reduced pro‑rata, with a corresponding increase in the hourly rate to ensure pay is not affected.
