Head of Risk & Compliance (Legal)

Our client, a leading UK law firm, is seeking a new Head of Risk & Compliance to lead its established Risk & Compliance team. The firm has offices across London, Cambridge, Reading, and Southampton.

Location: Contractually based from either Reading, Cambridge, or Southampton (2 days per week). Occasional travel to non-contracted offices will be expensed when required.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage the firm\’s compliance and risk management frameworks in line with UK regulatory requirements.
• Oversee key areas including ALM, Data Protection, Anti-Bribery, Conflicts, and professional indemnity.
• Manage and mentor a cross-office Risk & Compliance team.
• Chair quarterly Risk Meetings and oversee the implementation of compliance actions.
• Handle regulatory audits and support engagement with the SRA, Legal Ombudsman, and insurers.
• Maintain critical registers (Gifts & Hospitality, Data Breach) and oversee insurance renewals and supplier management.
• Develop and deliver firmwide Risk & Compliance training.

Key Skills / Requirements:

• Proven experience leading a law firm\’s Risk & Compliance department at Manager, Senior Manager, or Head level.
• Deep knowledge of SRA Standards & Regulations, AML legislation, PEPs, sanctions, and complex client structures.
• Strong understanding of regulatory risk, insurance, data privacy, complaints, and professional conduct.
• Exceptional communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
