The Role

As a Lead Electrical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in the design and development of the electrical systems across our yacht range. Reporting to the Design Manager, you will be responsible for producing accurate and detailed electrical drawing packages, including electrical schematics, panel designs and cable running schedules for our yachts. This is a highly technical role with a tangible output, providing accurate 2D CAD information to support Overall Production. You will also contribute to product improvement, R&D and value engineering projects, ensuring best practice is incorporated into both new designs and existing models. Working closely with Production, Engineering, Joinery, Procurement, Client Managers and the wider Design team, you will help ensure electrical design standards, quality and consistency are maintained across the Oyster range.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Electrical Design & Engineering
    • Oversee and maintain electrical design standards across our range.
    • Produce, check, update and issue accurate 2D electrical schematic and panel drawings using AutoCAD.
    • Develop contract-specific 2D CAD electrical information for Production.
    • Produce accurate cable running schedules, considering manufacturing processes and installation requirements.
    • Establish clear and accurate scopes of supply using the project's Master Work List.
    • Lead the Electrical Design Change Request (DCR) process.
    • Ensure electrical design information is delivered accurately and to agreed deadlines.
  • Design Leadership & Collaboration
    • Provide technical oversight to the wider Electrical Design team and Electrical Production Managers to ensure required deliverables and deadlines are achieved.
    • Maintain and manage resources within the Electrical Design team.
    • Work closely with Production, Electrical, Engineering and Joinery teams to ensure designs meet manufacturing and installation requirements.
    • Attend development, production and project meetings, providing timely technical information and responding to production feedback.
    • Work with Client Managers and Procurement to manage the electrical design aspects of the external supply chain.
    • Contribute to management reporting and ensure design information reflects contract variations and production requirements.
  • Product Improvement & Innovation
    • Contribute to product improvement, R&D and value engineering projects.
    • Identify opportunities to improve electrical systems, quality, consistency and manufacturing efficiency.
    • Keep up to date with developments in marine electrical technology and apply relevant best practice across the range.

About You

You will be an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with strong technical knowledge of marine electrical systems and a passion for delivering high-quality design solutions. You will be comfortable working across the full design and production process and collaborating with multiple teams to ensure designs are practical, accurate and delivered on time.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Have in-depth knowledge of marine AC and DC electrical systems, materials and techniques.
  • Have a strong understanding of electrical installation within small craft production.
  • Have a sound understanding of yacht systems, including component locations and installation requirements.
  • Have significant electrical design experience, ideally within a marine or comparable environment.
  • Have strong AutoCAD skills and be confident producing detailed 2D electrical drawings.
  • Have good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Be able to interpret manufacturing and installation requirements and translate these into accurate design information.
  • Have excellent attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Be able to manage multiple priorities and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Have strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Production, Engineering, Procurement and other stakeholders.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with marine digital switching systems such as CZone.
  • Experience with marine lighting systems and system integration.
  • Experience with marine electrical and hybrid drive systems.
  • Experience working within yacht or small craft production.
  • Experience leading or coordinating electrical design resources.

Qualifications

  • Design-related degree or relevant qualification, or equivalent electrical design experience.
  • 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations qualification.
  • BMEA Marine Electrical Technician qualification (Desirable).
