UCL Institute of Ophthalmology conducts cutting-edge research, attracting researchers of the highest international calibre to a stimulating research environment. The Institute is committed to a multi-disciplinary research portfolio that furthers an understanding of the eye and visual systems, linked with clinical investigations targeted to specific problems in the prevention and treatment of eye disease.
Based on its expertise not only in research, but in real-world use of that research, the Institute has developed two Masters programmes within the translational space, the MSc Bioscience Innovation & Enterprise and the MSc Bioscience R&D. It is also involved in graduate training of research students (MD, MPhil, PhD), and delivers a total of eight highly regarded taught postgraduate programmes.
The combination of the Institute’s research with the expertise and resources of Moorfields Eye Hospital, which has the largest ophthalmic patient population in the Western World, facilitates advances at the forefront of vision research and provides an unparalleled clinical and academic setting for education and training in bioscience innovation.
There are four Research Priority Pillars at IoO: Visual Neuroscience, Disease Mechanisms, Development and Ageing, Genomic and Translational Medicine. These thematic specialties give rise to expertise in translation of innovation into social and economic value. The Institute’s expertise in areas from genetics to digital health have produced many spinouts, licences, partnerships, plus clinical and process innovations.
UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) invites applications for a Lecturer (Teaching) to teach on, and support growth of, its novel cross-disciplinary MSc Bioscience Innovation & Enterprise programme. This MSc is positioned as teaching scientists the parts of business that are most relevant for real-world value-creation.
The Lecturer will have responsibility for the design, development and delivery of science and/or digital health entrepreneurship-related modules and will have responsibility in conjunction with the Programme Director and other Module Leads for the organisation, growth and strategic management of the programme, for continued quality improvements and for the academic experience of the students on the programme.
To note, this Lecturer position covers enterprise and innovation within bioscience and digital health, and does not require ophthalmology domain expertise. The post offers an exciting opportunity for someone to play a key role in developing new forms of education at the interface between science, digital health and business, in a highly successful and dynamic research and teaching Institute, as well as benefiting from the opportunities afforded by being part of the larger financial, educational, pedagogic and administrative community of the Faculty of Brain Sciences at UCL. This role is not eligible for sponsorship.
You will have a solid knowledge of concepts, practice, trends and dynamics within bioscience entrepreneurship, innovation, technology transfer, digital health, knowledge exchange or aligned fields, including scientific/digital literacy and educational background. The ability to place bioscience entrepreneurship-related theories in context in the practice of new-venture creation at the science-business interface is essential in addition to significant experience of teaching for- or about- biosciences entrepreneurship and innovation and/or digital health innovation. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellence in delivery of taught content and/or outstanding teaching evaluations.
Experience of working with students or colleagues from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, including experience of working collaboratively with students to improve the quality of education in response to feedback is essential.
