We’re seeking an experienced Freelance Site Manager to lead the on‑site delivery of exhibition stand builds across a range of venues and event formats. This role is responsible for coordinating crew, suppliers, and logistics on the ground to ensure stands are built safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards — on time and to spec. You’ll be the main on‑site point of contact, working closely with the Production / Project Manager and venue teams, and taking ownership of day‑to‑day site operations from load‑in to handover and de‑rig.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take full responsibility for on‑site build delivery, from initial load‑in through to final handover and breakdown.
  • Lead and manage build crew on‑site, allocating tasks clearly and maintaining pace against the build schedule.
  • Act as the on‑site liaison with venue management, service partners, and client representatives.
  • Interpret stand drawings, RAMS, and build plans, ensuring construction follows design intent and technical requirements.
  • Coordinate deliveries, storage, and material flow to keep builds organised and avoid downtime.
  • Oversee installation of stand structures, graphics, AV, lighting, flooring, and furniture, ensuring high‑quality finish.
  • Manage snagging and problem‑solving on‑site, escalating issues where necessary and implementing fast fixes.
  • Ensure all crew and suppliers work in line with Health & Safety policies, PPE requirements, and venue regulations.
  • Conduct site briefings / toolbox talks and maintain a safe, tidy, and compliant working environment.
  • Track progress against program, adjusting resources or sequencing as required to hit deadlines.
  • Maintain clear site documentation: time sheets, incident logs, variations, progress notes, and sign‑offs.
  • Lead de‑rig and load‑out efficiently, ensuring stand elements are packed correctly and returned safely.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong, demonstrable experience as a Site Manager or Senior Crew Lead within exhibitions, live events, or stand build environments.
  • Proven ability to manage on‑site teams and multiple suppliers under tight, immovable deadlines.
  • Confident reading and working from technical drawings, floorplans, and build specifications.
  • Excellent working knowledge of exhibition build processes, materials, modular systems, and custom stand construction.
  • Solid understanding of on‑site logistics, scheduling, and venue operating constraints.
  • Strong Health & Safety knowledge relevant to live build environments, including RAMS and safe systems of work.
  • Calm, decisive, and solutions‑focused when handling last‑minute changes or high‑pressure situations.
  • Clear communicator with a professional, client‑facing manner.
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • CSCS / SSSTS / SMSTS or equivalent site safety certification is highly desirable (depending on venue and project).
  • Flexible availability for early starts, late finishes, nights, and multi‑day builds.
  • Full driving licence preferred; own vehicle a bonus depending on location.
