Location: Chelmsford Compressor Station (travel across the East region required)

Salary: up to £52,519 base DOE + up to 6% bonus + company vehicle + 10-15% additional earnings through overtime and standby

About the role

We're looking for a Mechanical Technician to join our clients team supporting the safe and reliable operation of National Gas assets across the East region. Although you'll be based near Chelmsford Compressor Station, this is a field-based role requiring regular travel across Essex and the Thames Estuary. You'll primarily maintain compressor stations, pipelines and AGI assets, ensuring critical infrastructure continues to operate safely and efficiently to keep gas flowing and running smoothly. You'll work alongside electrical and instrumentation specialists while bringing your mechanical expertise to rotating equipment, valves, pressure systems and associated plant.

What you'll be doing

  • Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across compressor stations and pipeline assets.
  • Inspect, maintain and repair rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, valves and pressure systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and restore equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Support commissioning of new plant and equipment.
  • Issue permits, define isolations and lead safe systems of work.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and asset records.
  • Supervise contractors and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Participate in the standby rota once fully trained, typically one week in every four or five.

What you'll bring

Essential

  • Proven mechanical maintenance experience within an industrial, process or safety-critical environment.
  • Experience working on rotating equipment, compressors, pumps or pressure systems.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of safe systems of work, permits and isolations.
  • Engineering apprenticeship or equivalent with a Level 3 qualification.
  • Compex 11.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • Experience within gas transmission, utilities, petrochemical or oil & gas industries.
  • Knowledge of pipelines and compressor station equipment.
  • Experience supporting commissioning or plant upgrades.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
