We're recruiting for a Commercial Manager / Commercial Estimating Engineer to join a well-established precision engineering company supplying into the aerospace sector. This is a key, hands-on role combining commercial leadership, estimating, and technical customer engagement, ideal for an engineer with strong commercial acumen. You'll take ownership of customer enquiries from initial quote through to contract completion, ensuring accurate costing, strong customer relationships, and profitable delivery.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate customer enquiries for machined components and assemblies
- Produce accurate manufacturing cost estimates and quotations within agreed timescales
- Develop optimal manufacturing methods from drawings or digital data
- Create clear, detailed quotes with supporting technical narratives
- Project manage new business, including project plans and documentation
- Conduct thorough contract reviews, ensuring all materials, specifications, and requirements are captured
- Perform quick-load assessments for new orders
- Take ownership of customer contracts from quote through to completion
- Liaise technically with customers and act as a key commercial contact
- Negotiate raw material pricing and manage supplier relationships, including sourcing new subcontract processes
- Provide technical support on methods, tooling, and manufacturing approach
- Monitor contract profitability and work with production and supply chain on pricing reviews and cost control
- Drive continuous improvement, focusing on quality, delivery, and cost reduction
- Keep customers informed on progress and commercial matters
- Ensure all safety, quality, and conduct procedures are followed
- Support colleagues and promote best practice across the business
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Strong mechanical engineering background
- Proven ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical data
- Experience in precision machining or subcontract engineering (highly advantageous)
- Commercial awareness with experience in estimating, quoting, or account management
- Confident communicator, both written and verbal, at all levels
- Good IT literacy
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing / Continuous Improvement techniques advantageous
- Experience managing customer accounts within an engineering environment beneficial
- Proactive, flexible, and solutions-focused with a strong work ethic
