We are a small UK international development charity working in partnership with a small Kenyan community led organisation. For the next step in our transformational journey, we need a trustee to oversee our strategy as it develops and ensure our UK governance remains robust and effective.
As a small, volunteer‑led charity, we rely on trustees to support the implementation of our strategy. This is a varied role with oversight of multiple areas. We are recruiting new trustees to support existing members with specific areas of our strategy – digital, social enterprise and volunteer engagement and need someone to maintain an overview of the full strategy moving forward.
Running alongside activities undertaken by trustees, advisors and volunteers, this role will help ensure that everyone understands the potential and importance of social enterprise, which is our new focus and needs to underpin other key plans as well as link to our communications and engagement. We know the impact of this could be life‑changing for the local community, now and in the long term, but need your expertise to also help secure the income needed to kick‑start the social enterprise project and support Twende Pamoja to successfully implement and grow the range of planned activities. This means you will play a crucial role in driving real change and transforming the lives of a small rural community in western Kenya.
As an experienced leader, you will help guide us as we continue to reflect on and change our relationship with our partner organisation to make a long lasting impact in an isolated, rural community. With strong governance, we can approach new funders and corporate sponsors, with a unique strategy we can create partnerships and better opportunities for our partner and their beneficiaries.
What are we looking for?
- Expertise in any combination of leadership, strategy and governance.
- An interest in global issues such as economic and environmental sustainability and climate change and how these can be addressed on a small scale by local communities.
- A successful track record in strategy development and implementation.
- Experience of working at a senior management / leadership level.
- Demonstrable and practical experience of delivering transformational change to processes, delivering time and cost savings and improved reporting outcomes.
- Experience of project management.
- Ability to work as part of a team and willingness to take collective responsibility for the governance of our charity.
- Ability to work at a strategic and visionary level whilst understanding the detail and complexities of delivery, and the influencing skills needed to bring staff and stakeholders along with plans.
- Strong communicator.
- Ability to analyse risks and opportunities, and take a balanced approach to both.
- Extensive networks, and a willingness to draw on contacts as appropriate.
- Willingness to make a long term commitment to Team Kenya and Twende Pamoja.
What will you be doing?
You will oversee due diligence processes and risk management, and ensure robust governance structures. Working closely with our partnership team which includes trustees and advisers in the UK as well as board members and staff in Kenya, you will be overseeing our strategic development based around local social enterprise activities which allow the community in Ndhiwa to thrive.
As a board we hold quarterly online meetings, an annual workshop alongside our AGM and other opportunities throughout the year to connect with trustees, advisers, volunteers and Twende Pamoja staff in Kenya. A visit to Kenya to see Twende Pamoja’s projects in action and how truly impactful they are is highly recommended. This is especially important as it will allow you to experience staying at Karibuni Eco-Cottages – the hub of Twende Pamoja’s exciting new social enterprise developments and other innovative projects.
