Applications are invited for a consultant post in respiratory medicine to replace a retiring team member. The role is based across South Tyneside and Sunderland Royal Hospital, providing elective and non‑elective services for a local population of nearly half a million people.

Responsibilities

  • Provide respiratory medicine care across both sites, including elective and non‑elective activity.
  • Participate in research and contribute to the local research team.
  • Attend weekly multi‑disciplinary team meetings, departmental meetings, and lead in specific specialty interest areas.
  • Deliver comprehensive patient management and follow‑up for chest and acute general medical conditions.
  • Advise and support both within and outside the trust as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with primary care and regional specialty colleagues.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Primary medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or eligibility for entry within six months of starting the post (with executive approval).
  • Teaching and education experience: supervising junior medical staff; participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; ability to teach clinical, technical, or practical skills. Preference for a qualification in medical education.
  • Audit and research experience: ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice; involvement in quality improvement measures. Preference for published research in refereed journals and experience of clinical research.
  • Management and administrative experience: understanding of NHS, clinical governance and resource issues; organisational and time‑management skills. Preference for evidence of management experience, management course or certificate.
  • Relevant clinical audit experience and understanding of clinical governance.
  • Understanding of Good Medical Practice as set by the GMC.
  • Evidence of ability to manage routine and emergency general medical patients.
