Hospitality And Culinary Team: Our Hospitality and Culinary team are based in the Devonshire Dome in Buxton, offering hands-on, real-world learning in industry-standard facilities. We are a diverse team of chefs, hospitality professionals and educators, committed to a friendly, inclusive environment where staff and students succeed together.

About The Role

You will help shape the next generation of chefs. This role includes mentoring, inspiring and passing on craft and culture to apprentices as they begin or develop their careers. You will deliver hands-on teaching and workshops in fully equipped kitchens and hospitality suites, supporting apprentices across programmes including Commis Chef and Production Chef Apprenticeships to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours aligned to apprenticeship standards.

On appointment, the job title for this role will be Chef Instructor Mentor.

About You

We are seeking an industry expert in Catering and Hospitality with significant industrial or commercial experience. You should demonstrate the ability to engage learners and support high-quality learning outcomes to empower apprentices to grow in confidence, professionalism and creativity.

Principal accountabilities

  • Plan and deliver practical, technical vocational and theoretical learning activities for apprentices, including training, learning support and assessment, on and off the job.
  • Prepare learning materials to develop knowledge, skills and behaviours linked to apprenticeship standards or frameworks.
  • Demonstrate tasks and processes to individuals and groups.
  • Provide instruction to required standards and give feedback on progress through written and online methods; coach for high progress and attainment.
  • Mentor apprentices to ensure appropriate selection and alignment with employer needs.
  • Supervise groups of apprentices during knowledge and skill acquisition through off-the-job learning, project work or work placement.
  • Assess knowledge and skills using various methods, including coaching to accelerate learning.
  • Provide learning support to apprentices and keep records up to date.
  • Prepare apprentices for external qualification and end-point assessment per apprenticeship requirements.
  • Complete internal, employer and external documentation and track progress (attendance and achievement) using prescribed systems.
  • Ensure assessments meet awarding body and college QA standards.
  • Integrate English and Maths development into learning activities.
  • Monitor attendance of apprentices at off-the-job activities and keep employers informed.
  • Coach apprentices to behave professionally and maintain safety in the workplace and during off-the-job activities.
  • Develop new business opportunities with liaison and business development teams to increase employer engagement and uptake.
  • Undertake other duties as required within the general level of responsibility.
  • Comply with Safeguarding, Prevent, Health and Safety, Quality, Equality and Diversity and related policies.

General Duties

  • Aim to achieve personal and team targets for recruitment, progression and completion of apprentices.
  • Mentor apprentices, acting as liaison between apprentice, employer and off-the-job training provider.
  • Participate in College and University staff development programs.
  • Participate in curriculum management activities, including open days, recruitment events and external moderation.
  • Ensure compliance with the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy.
  • Adhere to copyright, software licensing and related procedures.
  • Ensure quality assurance procedures are followed and take additional action when required.

Person specification

  • Hold or be willing to undertake a Level 5 teaching qualification.
  • Level 2 English and Maths qualifications (Functional Skills or GCSE A-C/4-9) or willingness to achieve within an agreed timescale.
  • Relevant Catering & Hospitality vocational qualification at level 3 or higher.
  • Food safety qualifications.

Experience

  • Significant industrial or commercial experience in Catering & Hospitality.
  • Proven ability to engage with learners to support high-quality learning outcomes.

  • Well-developed administrative and organisational skills.
