A. Achievement of Students

  • Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge students.
  • Promote good progress and outcomes by students.
  • Establish a safe and stimulating environment for students, rooted in mutual respect.
  • Set goals that stretch and challenge students of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions.
  • Demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values and behaviour which are expected of students.

B. Teaching Quality

  • Promote high standards of literacy, articulacy and correct usage of standard English.
  • Impart knowledge and develop understanding through effective use of lesson time.
  • Promote a love of learning and foster children’s intellectual curiosity.
  • Set homework and plan out-of-class activities to consolidate and extend knowledge.
  • Reflect systematically on lesson effectiveness and teaching approaches.
  • Differentiating appropriately, using approaches that empower all students.

  • Use Individual Student Tracking and other assessment data to monitor progress, set targets and plan lessons.
  • Provide regular oral and written feedback and encourage students to respond.
  • Undertake peer lesson observations as directed by the Deputy Headmaster – Academic.

  • Fulfil teacher’s wider professional responsibilities.
  • Maintain consistently high standards of personal and professional conduct as detailed in the Teachers’ Standards.
  • Respect the ethos, policies and practices of the School, maintaining high standards in attendance and punctuality.
  • Understand and act within statutory frameworks for professional duties and responsibilities.
  • Contribute to the development of the department under the Head of Department.
  • Design and provide an engaging curriculum within your subject area.
  • Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the School.
  • Develop professional relationships with colleagues, seeking advice and support when needed.
  • Deploy support staff effectively.
  • Improve teaching through professional development, responding to advice and feedback.
  • Communicate effectively with parents about student achievements and well-being.
  • Stay updated with departmental and School developments, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of professional duties.
  • Carry out supervisory duties.
  • Evaluate performance and commit to professional development.

D. Pastoral (inc. Behaviour and Safety)

  • Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment.
  • Help safeguard the welfare of students.
  • Contribute to pastoral support for students.
  • Establish clear rules and routines for classroom behaviour and promote courteous behaviour in accordance with the School’s Behaviour Policy.
  • Encourage high standards of appearance and maintain good relationships with students.
  • Use a range of discipline strategies, including praise, sanctions and rewards, consistently and fairly.
  • Manage classes effectively, adopting approaches suitable to student needs and motivating participation.
  • Act decisively when necessary and exercise appropriate authority.
  • Identify potential child abuse or neglect, following safeguarding procedures.
  • Know legal safeguarding requirements and apply local arrangements.
  • Act as a vertical tutor and handle pastoral matters, discipline, attendance, reports, assemblies, form rooms, etc.
  • Take additional responsibilities as reasonably requested by the Headmaster.
