We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and highly motivated resident Sporting Assistant to work at our busy day and boarding school. The role is aimed largely at recent graduates who are interested in a career in education and wish to gain valuable work experience.
Key Aspects of Role
- Full‑time role during term time (39 hours per week).
- Sports Department – 10 hours per week (flexible based on department needs).
- Boarding duties – 29 hours per week, split as: 1 evening per week, 20 hours every weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday as required).
- Time off – at least two 24‑hour periods per week (not consecutive).
Salary and Benefits
- Salary: NYC Grade CD, point 3 – current £22,657 per annum (pay award pending).
- Accommodation: provided free of charge in the boarding house (term time only; not available during school holidays).
- Meals: provided free of charge on duty; you must pay for meals at other times.
- Additional benefits: free on‑site car parking.
Sports Department Responsibilities
- Work closely with PE staff to support learning in PE lessons.
- Set up equipment in indoor and outdoor teaching areas.
- Manage weekend lettings – lock/unlock facilities and be available to user groups.
- Assist with organising, promoting and delivering extracurricular activities during lunchtime and after school.
- Liaise with other schools regarding fixtures.
- Book transport and organise kit requirements.
- Assist with organisation and administration of the annual Sports Presentation Evening.
- Coordinate with the facilities management team on sports pitch markings.
- Provide general administrative support to the PE department, including maintenance of notice boards.
- Support student success via the school website, displays and local press in liaison with the Marketing Manager.
- Promote and safeguard student welfare.
- Participate in training, including Health & Safety, and other learning activities.
- Report maintenance issues and health & safety concerns in line with departmental regulations.
- Attend relevant meetings and performance development sessions as required.
Boarding Responsibilities
- Take responsibility for students in the boarding house, including evening, weekend and overnight duties.
- Plan and deliver activities for the boarding community.
- Provide pastoral care to help students thrive and maintain record‑keeping as per school procedures.
- Complete all mandatory training: safeguarding, first aid, fire training and, where required, additional training such as First Aid, PAT testing, and minibus training (desirable).
- Supervise sick or injured students, including overnight and arranging medical assistance when necessary.
- Attend departmental meetings and CPD activities; commit to ongoing professional development.
- Participate in off‑site trips and residential activities as required.
- Support the wider life of the school by organising and delivering evening and weekend activities.
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
- Open and manage sports venues for external lettings on weekends and be on call to assist users.
Person Specification
- Recent graduate, preferably in a sports‑related field.
- Experience of coaching or playing sport to a good standard.
- Experience or qualifications in umpiring or refereeing.
- Experience working with children and young people.
- Good IT skills.
- Compassionate, approachable and reliable.
- Flexible, enthusiastic, resilient and possessing a ‘can‑do’ attitude.
- Willing to undertake additional training as required (e.g., First Aid, PAT testing, minibus training).
Training Days
Boarding staff are expected to remain on duty during teacher training days, typically commencing at 4.00 pm when students return. These days may coincide with the start of term.
