The school operates over three sites: Granville Road (S2) – The Bridge, Talbot/Newfield campus (S8) and Peaks College, Waterthorpe Greenway (S20). The successful applicants will need to be able to work at and travel to any of these sites.

Curriculum & Pathways

The curriculum is built on four foundations: ‘Communication, Language and Literacy’, ‘Cognition and Learning’, ‘Social and Emotional’ and ‘Physical and Sensory’. All foundations are very closely connected, each complimenting and facilitating the development of the other. All students have independent learning priorities linked to these four foundations.

The implementation of the curriculum is made accessible and appropriate by clearly identifying a student’s needs and stage of development, ensuring the learning environment closely matches their needs. Our curriculum runs on three clear curriculum pathways, all delivered through a personalised approach built upon our four foundations. Students are assessed before entering the school to determine which pathway would best suit them and to enable individual needs to be met through the inclusive curriculum. Curriculum pathways will allow learning journeys to start from individual pupils’ current strengths and needs. The pathway selected will depend upon the student’s needs and long‑term goals. We avoid rigid placement within a pathway and movement between pathways is possible following a re‑evaluation of a student’s needs and progress.

We use the whole range of curriculum subjects to provide breadth of experience and opportunity. This approach maximises engagement in learning, ensures access to learning is personalised and rich and meaningful experiences support individual outcomes. The curriculum is implemented through contextual learning experiences where students are supported to generalise their skills across a range of learning opportunities. Teaching styles and pedagogy vary according the needs of the students, with an emphasis on developing independence across all pathways.

Through our curriculum and extra‑curricular activities we aim to develop our students’ ability to manage their emotions, relate to others, organise themselves, gather and use information, as well as think creatively and critically. We aim to nurture, inspire, share learning and celebrate achievement.

At Seven Hills School our intent for our Post 16 learners is for them to be as prepared for adulthood as possible. To be prepared for adulthood we consider that students need to experience more of the community, be seen and recognised as part of the community and engage in various aspects of the community; develop knowledge and skills that will allow them to live with as much independence as they can; recognise how to remain healthy, through physical activity, what they eat and their life choices; be ready for their next steps, whether this be a social care placement, a college course, or employment. Our curriculum is designed to give students the knowledge of their next steps, the skills to be ready for their next steps, and the experience of meeting people and visiting places that might inform their future.

Develop their functional literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to engage in the world around them once they move into adulthood. As with the rest of the school, our Post 16 curriculum is divided into three curriculum pathways: developmental, semi‑formal and formal pathways. Although there is some variation, we are attempting to prepare students for their next steps in adulthood as mentioned above.

Accreditation in Post 16: There are a number of accreditation options in Post 16 including:
ASDAN Towards Independence for our Developmental Pathway
ASDAN Lifeskills Challenge for our Semi‑Formal and Formal Pathways
Functional Skills Entry Level Awards – for English and Maths

Teaching Role

You will work as class tutor for pupils with complex physical and learning needs and be committed to providing rich and challenging learning experiences across the curriculum. All pupils at Seven Hills School have learning difficulties and many have other associated difficulties relating to communication, behaviour, sensory, physical and/or medical disabilities. In common with many other special schools, pupils admitted have increasingly complex needs and some have challenging behaviour.

An ability to establish excellent relationships with students and deliver a wide range of subjects to students with very low level learning is essential. The successful applicant will be expected to teach students with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. There may also be the opportunity for some specialist subject teaching across the school so please specify areas where you could deliver high quality subject teaching in your application.

Ideally the people appointed will have relevant experience/qualifications within SEND and be an enthusiastic, committed and a skilled professional. However, colleagues from both primary and secondary mainstream backgrounds with a willingness to learn will also be considered. Applications from Early Career Stage teachers are welcome, the school is able to provide a programme of support and development for ECTs. An up to date Team Teach qualification or a willingness to train for this will be essential. Applicants should be comfortable working as part of an experienced team of teaching and support staff and specialist professional colleagues.

It will require resilient and highly effective teachers who are committed to providing stimulating and engaging learning activities and who are able to use visual support to structure learning and classroom organisation.
