At Seven Hills School we promote curiosity and enthusiasm in our students, encourage them to become independent learners and develop confidence for life beyond school.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is built on four foundations: Communication, Language and Literacy, Cognition and Learning, Social and Emotional, and Physical and Sensory. All foundations are closely connected and complement each other. All students have independent learning priorities linked to these four foundations.

Implementation is made accessible by identifying a student’s needs and stage of development, ensuring that the learning environment closely matches them. The curriculum runs on three clear pathways, delivered through a personalised approach. Students are assessed before entry to determine the most suitable pathway and to meet individual needs through an inclusive curriculum.

We use the whole range of curriculum subjects to provide breadth of experience and opportunity, maximising engagement. The curriculum is implemented through contextual learning experiences where students generalise skills across opportunities. Teaching styles and pedagogy vary according to student needs, emphasising independence across all pathways.

Pathway Details

  • Pathway 1 – Students spend the majority of their time with their class teacher, based in their own classroom. Emphasis in Phase 1 is on basic skills and a wide variety of educational experiences.
  • Pathway 2 – Students follow a sensory curriculum and learn best when related to a concrete experience. Focus on communication, supported by AAC, Zones of Regulation, play, intensive interaction and Makaton.
  • Pathway 3 – Students follow the subject‑specific pathway, accessing modified National Curriculum subjects. From Year 9, students may be entered for Entry Level exams. AAC is embedded throughout the day; practical activities aid generalisation.

Role Expectations

The successful teacher will work as a class tutor for pupils with complex physical and learning needs, providing rich and challenging learning experiences across the curriculum. They will establish excellent relationships with students and deliver a wide range of subjects to students with very low learning levels. Specialist subject teaching opportunities may exist; please indicate areas of expertise in your application.

Ideally, candidates will have relevant SEND experience and qualifications, be enthusiastic, committed and skilled. We also consider mainstream primary or secondary educators willing to learn, including Early Career Stage teachers. An up‑to‑date Team Teach qualification, or willingness to train, is essential. Candidates should be comfortable working within an experienced teaching and support team.

The posts are suited to professionals passionate about innovation in teaching and learning, especially in the specialist sector. Resilient, highly effective teachers who are committed to providing stimulating, engaging activities and who can use visual supports to structure learning and classroom organisation are required.
