We are seeking a skilled, resilient, and emotionally intelligent Year 5 Class Teacher to work in primary schools across Swansea, supporting classes with high levels of behavioural need. This role is suited to a teacher who understands that strong relationships, consistency, and calm authority are just as important as excellent teaching.

The successful candidate will take full responsibility for a busy Year 5 class where behaviour can at times be challenging and unpredictable, including incidents of aggression or violence. You will be expected to create a classroom culture that is structured, safe, and nurturing, while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations for learning and behaviour.

This is not a passive role. It requires a teacher who can remain composed under pressure, respond decisively to incidents, and reset the classroom environment quickly so learning can continue.

The Classroom Environment

Classes are lively, diverse, and fast-paced. Pupils may present with emotional, social, and behavioural needs linked to trauma, unmet needs, or additional learning needs. You will need to anticipate triggers, recognise early warning signs, and intervene early to prevent escalation. You will use consistent routines, predictable structures, and clear consequences to support pupils’ emotional regulation.

When incidents arise, you will be confident using de-escalation strategies, including calm verbal communication, space and time techniques, restorative conversations, and support from colleagues where necessary. Physical safety, safeguarding, and emotional wellbeing are priorities. You will be expected to follow behaviour and safeguarding policies closely, record incidents accurately, and work proactively with senior leaders, ALN staff, and external agencies.

What We’re Looking For
