SEN Progress & Engagement Mentor

Primary SEN School | Complex Needs | Stockport

What if your next job could change the course of a child's life?

We're looking for a Progress & Engagement Mentor to join our specialist primary SEN school in Stockport, supporting children with complex needs to engage, communicate, learn and thrive.

This isn't simply a classroom support role.

It's about becoming a trusted adult who helps a child take their next step β€” whether that's joining an activity, communicating a need, managing an emotion, developing independence or achieving something they never thought they could.

The progress might be small. The impact is huge.

What will you do?

Working alongside teachers, support staff and other professionals, you'll provide personalised support that helps children get the most from their school experience.

Your day could include:

  • Building warm, trusting relationships with children.

  • Supporting pupils with complex learning, communication and developmental needs.

  • Encouraging children to engage in learning and play.

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support.

  • Helping children develop communication and social skills.

  • Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour.

  • Encouraging independence and celebrating every achievement.

  • Helping pupils access activities through creative and personalised approaches.

  • Supporting children with sensory needs and individual routines.

  • Working closely with teachers and the wider multidisciplinary team.

  • Helping children develop skills that will support them both inside and outside of school.

  • Recording and celebrating progress, however big or small.

You'll learn to see the achievements that others might miss.

The child who independently puts their coat on.

The pupil who uses a new communication method.

The moment a child joins in with an activity for the first time.

The smile when they realise, β€œI did it.”

Those moments matter.

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children and understands that every child communicates, learns and develops differently.

You might have experience in SEN, complex needs, autism, learning disabilities, education, care, therapy support or another relevant setting.

But above all, we're looking for someone with the right attitude and values.

You’ll be:

  • Patient, nurturing and compassionate.

  • Positive and enthusiastic about working with children.

  • Calm and emotionally resilient.

  • Creative and willing to try different approaches.

  • Confident working with children who have complex needs.

  • A great communicator and team player.

  • Observant and able to recognise subtle changes in behaviour and communication.

  • Committed to helping children become as independent as possible.

  • Someone who genuinely celebrates children's achievements.

No two children are the same

That's why we're not looking for someone who simply follows a script.

We want someone who is prepared to get to know each child, understand what motivates them and find creative ways to help them engage.

You might use music, movement, se
