Sports Coach Teaching Assistant
Location: Pontypool
Pay: £93 - £120 a day
Hours: 8:30am–3:30pm, Monday to Friday
Start date: September 2026
Contract: Full-time, term‑time only
What will the role involve?
- Providing classroom support across a range of secondary subjects
- Helping pupils understand instructions and begin their work
- Breaking activities into smaller, manageable steps
- Encouraging pupils to remain focused and engaged
- Supporting positive behaviour and classroom routines
- Building pupils’ confidence, resilience and independence
- Working with teachers and the school’s pastoral or ALN team
- Providing one‑to‑one or small‑group support when required
- Supporting the wider class and helping to create a positive learning environment
A smaller part of your timetable will involve supporting a pupil who uses sport as a positive way to engage with education.
You may use structured physical activities, sports‑based rewards or mentoring sessions to help the pupil:
- Build a positive relationship with school
- Improve their confidence and motivation
- Regulate their emotions
- Develop communication and teamwork skills
- Re‑engage with classroom learning
- Work towards agreed academic and behavioural targets
Any sports‑based sessions will form part of the pupil’s wider support plan and will be delivered alongside their classroom education.

You should be able to demonstrate:
- Confidence working with secondary‑aged pupils
- Strong communication and relationship‑building skills
- The ability to set clear and consistent boundaries
- Patience when supporting pupils who may find school challenging
- A positive and encouraging approach
- The ability to remain calm during difficult situations
- A genuine interest in helping young people succeed
You must also understand that the majority of the position will involve supporting pupils inside the classroom rather than delivering sports sessions throughout the day.
Additional Information
All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
