Secondary Behaviour Support Assistant – Full-Time | Merthyr and Aberdare

Do you have experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? Are you resilient, adaptable, and passionate about helping secondary-aged pupils re-engage with their education? We’re seeking a Secondary Behaviour Support Assistant to work across schools in Merthyr and Aberdare supporting pupils who require additional guidance with behaviour, emotional regulation, and classroom engagement.

As a Behaviour Support Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in helping pupils aged 11–16 overcome barriers to learning. You will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with challenging behaviour or SEMH needs
  • Use calm, consistent de-escalation strategies to manage incidents safely and effectively
  • Build positive, trusting relationships to encourage emotional regulation and engagement
  • Support pupils both in class and through targeted interventions outside of lessons
  • Liaise closely with teachers, pastoral teams, and SENCOs to deliver individual support plans

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience supporting young people with behavioural or emotional needs (essential)
  • Can drive and is comfortable travelling between schools across RCT (essential)
  • Remains calm, confident, and professional in challenging situations
  • Is proactive, patient, and committed to helping students achieve their potential
  • Brings transferable experience from youth work, residential care, sports coaching, or similar roles

EWC registration (School Learning Support Worker category)

Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply)
