Primary schools across Lancaster and nearby areas are seeking a caring, reliable, and proactive Welfare Assistant / Pastoral Care Worker to join their pastoral teams. This role is vital in supporting pupils’ emotional wellbeing, helping them regulate their feelings, and ensuring they feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. You’ll act as a trusted adult for children who may be experiencing social, emotional, or behavioural challenges. Working alongside safeguarding leads, SEN staff, and class teachers, you will play a key role in promoting positive mental health, improving attendance, and fostering an inclusive environment for every child.

  • Providing day‑to‑day pastoral and wellbeing support for pupils
  • Delivering 1:1 or small‑group emotional literacy, social skills, or wellbeing sessions
  • Supporting children with SEMH needs, anxiety, or behavioural difficulties
  • Offering a calm, safe space for pupils who need time to regulate
  • Building trusting relationships with vulnerable learners
  • Assisting with attendance and morning check‑ins
  • Communicating with staff, parents, and external agencies as needed
  • Supporting behaviour de‑escalation with a nurturing approach

Requirements:

  • Has experience working with children or young people (school, youth work, care, or similar)
  • Is calm, empathetic, patient, and emotionally resilient
  • Understands the needs of children with SEMH, trauma, or additional needs
  • Can stay composed and solution‑focused during challenging situations
  • Builds strong relationships based on trust and consistency
  • Values inclusion, wellbeing, and child‑centred support
  • (Bonus) Has experience with safeguarding, Thrive, ELSA, or behaviour support
