Position: Behaviour Support Mentor

Location: Lancaster

Contract: Full-time / Part-time

Start Date: 5th January

We are seeking a resilient, confident, and proactive Behaviour Support Mentor to join our dedicated team within a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). This role involves working with pupils who present behavioural, emotional, and social challenges and require consistent, structured support to re-engage with their learning.

Candidates with a background in the Army or Armed Forces are strongly encouraged to apply. Your experience in discipline, leadership, teamwork, and remaining calm in challenging environments will be highly valued in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent behavioural support to pupils, helping them regulate emotions, make positive choices, and re-engage with education.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships using clear boundaries and positive role-modelling.
  • Implement behaviour support strategies set by the PRU leadership team, SENCO, and external professionals.
  • De-escalate challenging situations using calm, structured, and safe approaches.
  • Support pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis, encouraging resilience, confidence, and personal growth.
  • Promote a safe, respectful, and motivating learning environment.
  • Assist teachers in maintaining positive behaviour and engagement during lessons and activities.

Qualifications

  • Has Army, Armed Forces, or similar disciplined background (highly beneficial).
  • Is calm, assertive, and confident when managing challenging behaviour.
  • Can set clear boundaries while remaining patient, understanding, and supportive.
  • Builds positive relationships and acts as a strong role model for young people.
  • Works well under pressure and stays composed in fast‑paced or unpredictable situations.
  • Is committed to helping pupils develop emotional resilience and re‑engage with learning.
