Salary

£25 – £35 per hour

Job Description

This role involves delivering high-quality tuition in English and mathematics to learners of varying ages and abilities. The tutor supports learners in building foundational knowledge and developing skills necessary for academic progression and personal development. The position requires effective planning and preparation of lessons, assessment of learner progress, and the ability to adapt teaching methods to meet individual needs. The tutor promotes a positive learning environment, encourages learner engagement, and assists learners in achieving their academic goals.

Key Duties

  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging and effective lessons in English and mathematics tailored to the learner’s level and learning style.
  • Assess and monitor learner progress through regular evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop individual learning plans to support learner needs and targets.
  • Use a variety of teaching techniques and resources to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate records of learner attendance, progress, and achievements.
  • Communicate effectively with learners and, where appropriate, with guardians or carers regarding progress and concerns.
  • Support learners in developing study skills and confidence to improve independent learning.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies, safeguarding requirements, and health and safety standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in English or mathematics, such as a Level 3 Certificate or equivalent.
  • Demonstrable experience of tutoring or teaching English and mathematics.
  • Understanding of the English National Curriculum or equivalent educational frameworks.

Education

  • Minimum of Level 3 qualification in a related subject or equivalent experience.
  • A degree or higher qualification in English, mathematics, education or a related field is advantageous but not essential.

Experience

  • Experience working with learners of different ages and abilities in an educational setting.
  • Proven ability to plan and deliver effective lessons in both English and mathematics.
  • Experience of assessing learner progress and adapting teaching approaches accordingly.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of English language and literature, grammar, and numeracy concepts.
  • Ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organisational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Patience, adaptability and a learner-centred approach.
  • Proficient in using educational resources and technology to support learning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching qualification such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent.
  • Qualification in tutoring or coaching.
  • Experience working with learners requiring additional support or with special educational needs.
  • Knowledge of examination requirements and preparation techniques for GCSE or equivalent qualifications.

Working Conditions

  • Flexible working hours, primarily part-time and often outside regular school hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Temporary contract with the possibility of extension based on performance and organisational requirements.
  • Work may take place in educational institutions, community centres, or remotely via online platforms.
  • Occasional requirement to travel within Greater London to meet learners’ needs.
  • Adherence to safeguarding policies to ensure the welfare and safety of all learners.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
