Teaching Personnel is recruiting Trainee Teaching Assistants to work in secondary schools across Newport and Cwmbran from September 2026.
This opportunity is ideal for graduates, sports coaches, care workers, support workers, youth workers, volunteers, career changers and anyone passionate about supporting children and young people.
You will complete online training before undertaking a five-day paid placement in a local secondary school. Once you have completed your training and placement, Teaching Personnel will support you in finding suitable full-time or part-time Teaching Assistant opportunities in your area.
As a Trainee Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils aged 11-16 within a secondary school environment.
Many of the pupils you work with may have Additional Learning Needs, Special Educational Needs or Disabilities. You will therefore need to be patient, compassionate and willing to learn how to provide effective support.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Supporting pupils during classroom lessons
- Providing one-to-one and small‑group support
- Helping pupils remain focused, engaged and motivated
- Supporting pupils with Additional Learning Needs
- Encouraging positive behaviour and building confidence
- Assisting teachers and other school support staff
- Helping to create a safe and inclusive learning environment
Before beginning your paid school placement, you will complete online training in areas including:
- Introduction to Working as a Teaching Assistant
- Level 2 Safeguarding
- Keeping Children Safe in Education
- Positive Behaviour Management
Once registered, you will also have access to further professional development covering areas such as autism, dyslexia, SEND, behaviour management and emotional well‑being.
We would like to hear from candidates who:
- Are passionate about education and supporting young people
- Are patient, enthusiastic, reliable and approachable
- Are committed to completing the required training
- Can work consistently during standard school hours
- Have previous experience working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults, although this is beneficial rather than essential
- Can demonstrate transferable skills from care, coaching, youth work, customer service, volunteering or other employment
- Are interested in supporting pupils with Additional Learning Needs
- Hold an Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service or are willing to apply for one
