Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a secondary SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in the Billinge area. The young people you will support may present with a range of SEMH needs, such as anxiety, attachment and trauma-related behaviours, emotional dysregulation, low confidence, social communication difficulties, and behavioural challenges. We are looking for someone who can combine empathy, resilience, and consistency to truly make a difference in pupils’ daily experience of school.

Role Overview

As an HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting learning, delivering lessons, and helping pupils engage positively with education. Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and specialists, you will ensure students receive the academic, emotional, and behavioural support they need to thrive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Delivering small group interventions and academic support sessions
  • Leading pre-planned lessons in the teacher’s absence
  • Supporting pupils to regulate emotions, manage behaviour, and stay engaged
  • Adapting learning materials to meet a wide range of individual needs
  • Assisting teachers with planning and assessment
  • Contributing to personalised behaviour and support plans
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Supporting during break/lunch times when needed
  • Implementing behaviour strategies consistently across the school

Requirements

  • HLTA qualification or relevant experience at an advanced TA level
  • Experience supporting young people, ideally within SEMH or SEN environments
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
  • Confidence delivering learning and leading groups
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
