Job Description
We are seeking a capable and forward-thinking Network & Cloud Technician to join our IT team in an independent school in Edinburgh. This role will involve maintaining and supporting our current network, servers, hardware and backups, and taking lead in managing our cloud services.Â
The post holder will spearhead the migration towards a fully cloud-based infrastructure, aligning with the School’s Digital Strategy. You will work closely with the Head of IT and other technical colleagues, ensuring our IT environment is secure, resilient, and supports excellent learning and teaching.
Main Responsibilities:
- Manage and support all cloud-based platforms and services (e.g. Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune, other SaaS tools) used across the school.
- Lead and deliver the migration of on premise infrastructure to a cloud first model, working with external vendors/partners where necessary.
- Install, configure, monitor and maintain network infrastructure, physical and virtual servers, storage systems, and backup solutions.
- Administer and monitor the school’s firewalls, switches, wireless networks, and internet connectivity.
- Maintain and support directory services (Active Directory / Azure AD), group policies, and staff/pupil account provisioning.
- Deploy, configure, and manage end-user devices using tools such as Intune, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, or similar.
- Oversee VoIP telephony, printers/copiers, associated management software; maintain CCTV infrastructure and security certificates.
- Ensure regular patch management, updates, preventative maintenance of systems, and monitoring for vulnerabilities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network and systems incidents in a timely manner.
- Keep accurate and up-to-date documentation of system architecture, configurations, inventory, and procedures.
- Liaise with third-party service providers, supply vendors, and external consultants as required.
- Support the Head of IT with planning and implementing infrastructure / cloud projects.
- Undertake hardware moves, installs, and refresh cycles across campus.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties required by the Head of IT to ensure the smooth operation of the school’s ICT services.
Continued Professional Development & Other Duties
- Stay current with emerging technologies, best practices, and regulatory/security requirements in education ICT.
- Participate in relevant training and professional networks.
- Provide occasional out-of-hours support for emergencies where necessary (in agreement with Head of IT).
Ideal Candidate:
The following are all essential requirements:
- Degree level or equivalent qualification in relevant subject.
- Proven experience in supporting and maintaining network infrastructure and L2/L3 network hardware.
- Experience working with Active Directory / Azure AD, directory services, and group policies.
- Good knowledge of cloud platform services (Office 365, Azure, SaaA), virtualisation (VMware/Hyper-V or similar).
- Strong problem-solving ability.
- Able to juggle competing requirements, prioritise workload, multi-task and work under pressure.
- A good team player.
The following are all desirable requirements:
- Certifications such as Microsoft Certified, Cisco, Fortinet, VMware etc.
- Experience in Azure cloud migration projects, or equivalent cloud migrations.
- Experience of scripting / automation (e.g. PowerShell) to support infrastructure changes.
- Prior experience in an educational environment, ideally in an independent school.
- Experience with MDM tools, JAMF or equivalent for mobile / Apple device management.
