We are seeking an enthusiastic, caring and engaging class teacher to join the teaching team at The Edinburgh Academy Junior School and Nursery. A class teacher at The Edinburgh Academy Junior School has responsibility for all core academic subjects, including Maths which is taught in sets from Primary 4. There is specialised teaching in Modern Foreign Languages, PE & Games, Science, Music and Art (from P3). The current Junior School timetable is based on 45-minute periods. The Junior School and Nursery sits in its own self-contained and extensive campus near the Botanic Gardens which provides the ideal environment for our youngest learners. In addition to the specialist provision above, our class teachers regularly work alongside Outdoor Learning experts to take education outside, bolstering resilience and wellbeing. Character Education forms an important part of the holistic education at The Edinburgh Academy and children learn about what it means to demonstrate our school values in their daily behaviours and choices.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create a supportive, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment built on strong, respectful relationships where all pupils feel valued, respected and safe.
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate high-quality, engaging lessons which are differentiated to meet the needs of all children in your class including stretch and support as appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for providing a broad, balanced, engaging and suitably differentiated curriculum accessible to all children in your class.
  • Contribute to ongoing curriculum development and school improvement initiatives as directed by the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Take account of pupils’ opinions about their own learning and wellbeing.
  • Assess pupil progress through a range of formative and summative assessment strategies, providing constructive feedback to support their development.
  • Integrate digital learning tools effectively to enhance teaching, learning and assessment, in line with school policy.
  • Write clear, honest and professional reports for parents and hold parent/teacher consultations as directed by the Senior Leadership Team or as required throughout the year.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external stakeholders to promote effective communication in support of pupils’ learning and wellbeing.
  • Identify and support pupils with additional support needs, contributing effectively to personal learning profiles or plans, and working collaboratively with Support for Learning colleagues.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding ensuring concerns are identified, recorded and communicated promptly in line with school procedures.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional learning in line with GTCS requirements.
  • Apply GIRFEC principles and relevant school‑specific policy frameworks to support pupils’ wellbeing and development.
  • Create an organised, stimulating and purposeful learning environment with high quality displays which reflect children’s learning.

Additional Expectations:

  • Be in school by at least 8.15am and ready to welcome your class at 8.25am.
  • Be available for all staff meetings and professional learning events which includes all Inservice days throughout the year.
  • Actively contribute to the wider life of the school which includes participating in the co‑curricular programme as set out in the staff handbook, modelling and promoting the school values in daily interactions.
  • Attend our annual Open Day on a Saturday, and support other important school events which may take place in the evenings or on occasional weekends.
  • Accompany your class to lunch each day and sit with them during the meal.
  • Perform two 20‑minute break time playground supervisions per week.
  • Carry out any reasonable additions to this list as deemed necessary by the Headteacher.

  • Be flexible, adaptable and willing to embrace new ideas and approaches to learning and teaching.

  • Have a child‑centred approach to learning and teaching which focuses on the holistic development of each child, recognising and nurturing their individual strengths, interests and potential.
