Support for Learning is a busy Department working throughout the Junior School and Senior School. Through its assessment and referral system, it identifies pupils experiencing difficulties at an early age and aims to establish profiles of learning needs, prioritising key areas to target in one to one and small group teaching. By giving advice to teaching staff and parents and by working co-operatively in pupils’ classes or by extracting the pupils, it aims to meet these needs and work towards allowing the pupil to demonstrate their knowledge as independently as possible. It values the knowledge and experience of the class and subject teachers and aims to enhance those skills by ensuring that teachers are familiar with strategies which may help their teaching of pupils who may need a more structured approach. This post will involve working with junior school pupils. In addition to curricular responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the extra-curricular life of the school.

Main Responsibilities: Please see attached job description.

Ideal Candidate: The successful candidate will be a qualified primary teacher and also have:

  • previous experience of working with pupils who have additional support needs
  • qualifications in the field of additional support needs or have undertaken significant Professional Learning in this area
  • knowledge of current legislation in the field of additional support needs
  • familiarity with assessment material to aid in the identification of pupils’ needs
  • demonstrates commitment to understanding of inclusive education

Additional Information: Heriot’s is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007 and the successful candidates will be required to obtain membership of the PVG scheme. Please note that parking is not available on our campus.
