About Kelvinside Academy

Kelvinside Academy is an independent, HMC, co-educational day school with around 600 pupils aged from 3 to 18. It may have first opened its doors in 1878 and be housed in a Grade A listed building in Glasgow’s West End, but there’s much more going on inside the walls than meets the eye.

It is a forward-thinking independent school with a focus on progressive pupil-centric learning at every stage and pushing beyond the boundaries of traditional academic assessment. It combines high standards of teaching and a superb extra-curricular programme within an inclusive and caring ethos to encourage the individual talents and ambitions of every young person.

Results in examinations are well above the national average. Pupils are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities for personal development through sport, music, drama, outdoor pursuits and clubs and societies. The first of its kind in the UK, Kelvinside’s state-of-the-art Innovation School facility has enabled design thinking and an architectural design studio model to be incorporated into the school’s curriculum from J1 to S6. Junior School classrooms are inspired by the collaborative, pupil-oriented Scandinavian school model featuring bleacher seating, mobile teaching stations and whiteboard desks. All Junior School pupils enjoy weekly Forest School sessions and Innovation School classes. Outdoor education plays a primary role in learning with our Wilderness Campus in the Cairngorms National Park, School Yacht “Level Best”, external roof garden classroom and Forest School partnership with the University of Glasgow.

Our Greek motto translates as ‘Ever to be the Best’. In recent years, this has been given a more modern interpretation and the ethos of the school is to challenge each individual pupil to ‘Be The Best You Can Be’ in all aspects of life.
